This is a gofundme campaign for a great man named Alexi Canas (Alex), a father of 8 American children, husband, man of faith, extremely hard worker, and 30+ year resident of the United States.
Alex was detained by ICE during a traffic court appearance in MD, and was then detained by ICE and moved to Louisiana. Once there, he was denied bail for being a "danger to the community". Alex has a completely clean criminal record, no auto accidents, or other bad behavior, in his 30+ years of living in the US. He works 6-7 days a week to take care of his family, and made what he realizes to be a poor decision to drive with a suspended license, however, he retained an attorney for his traffic case, and completed proactive driver improvement and community service in advance of the hearing where he was detained by ICE.
Unlike the political rhetoric, which states that only people who have terrible criminal records will be deported, this phrase "danger to the community" is being grossly and unfairly used against innocent people, such as Alex. Alex pays US income taxes, runs a licensed/insured home renovation company, owns his own home, is raising 8 children (one of whom has special needs), and services hundreds of clients in the region. This individual, is about as American as apple pie, and how any court could twist political motives to deport someone of this caliber, is despicable.
Alex is the main bread winner for his family, and while his three 18-22 y/o children will have to take on multiple jobs alongside their mother to make ends meet, the legal expenses of Alex's case, trial, and immigration proceedings, will be substantial. The community is coming together in a significant way to mount the best possible defense for Alex, and in all likelihood, if he is deported, it would be very dangerous for someone who has not been to El Salvador for 30+ years, to go back, with no one to go back to. Anything that can be spared to contribute to Alex's legal defense and give him a fighting chance to get out of detention, avoid deportation, and finally become an American - would be greatly appreciated. The total legal defenses will cost upwards of $40,000-$50,000, and as Alex was the primary breadwinner, his family unfortunately is already behind on their mortgage and bills.
Thank you for your kindness & generosity.
