Help Alex become a Coding WIZARD at School
Donation protected
Dearest friends!
This is my first crowd-funding campaign, and as scary as it is to ask for money, I know that I am privileged enough to be surrounded by an incredibly supportive community, and it is important to ask for what you need.
As many of you know, I have fallen in love with coding and decided to take the leap to apply to a program that can give me the knowledge and skills on my path to becoming a software developer. About a month ago I found out I was accepted into the April cohort at Alchemy Code Lab here in Portland, and was awarded a 50% scholarship, which I couldn’t be more grateful for.
However, I am still responsible for the remaining $10,000 worth of tuition fees, which does not include text books, school supplies, or the cost of living that will also arise. I am planning on taking out a loan, but with Lava and I’s existing student loan debt, and necessary home renovations (our roof is quite literally crumbling in spots), I want to make sure that whatever we take on is manageable, especially as it may take me some time to find a job at the end of the program. Any money that is donated will be used toward covering that remaining $10,000.
This will be the first time in my life that I will have the gift of attending school without working an additional job. I couldn’t be more excited for this particular program, the way it is structured, all it has to offer, and the opportunity to put my head and heart into it fully without distraction; and if I am able to get more of the tuition fees covered I won’t have to worry about money while I am balancing school.
When I made the decision to pursue coding, I was already thinking about the ways I can give back to our community. I am already dreaming up all the different theatre apps/programs that I want to create to better assist with design, performance, and audience engagement/enrichment, but I have also been thinking about how to pay it forward. I firmly believe that young people are going to be the innovators for the change that we need. And being a queer latinx woman, I want to see more young women of color seeing themselves in tech roles, and understanding that they have the tools and power to create real change. Therefore, I want to create a summer workshop for young women/non-binary individuals of color, where they will be encouraged to identify an equity issue facing our Portland community, then create an app/program to help address the issue and work toward solving the problem. These are only a few of my ideas, but know that if you make a donation toward my schooling, it will be reinvested in the community ten-fold.
Whether you share this campaign for me on social media, donate a few bucks, or a few hundred, please know that I am endlessly grateful. It is a vulnerable thing to ask for help and to take a leap to learn a new skill, but I am ready and focused on my goals.
