Hello Everyone,

I am currently a Ph.D. student at Fuller Seminary studying Systematic Theology (New Testament minor) with Joel Green. I entered my program on the premise that I had financial support from a church. By the end of this quarter, I will have completed 5 full quarters of coursework and passed the infamous academic German exam. Unfortunately, along with other students, I suddenly lost nearly all pledged financial support for my Ph.D. program by no fault of my own. Sadly, I know at least one other student that was supported already dropped out.

On my part, I have been working two part time jobs and have been searching for a full time one for a while now, but keep hitting walls. I need at least  $25,000 to push through and finish the coursework for the program (7 more  full-time classes) and hope to have a good idea about the financial feasibility of my program by January 1, 2017. If I can make just $8,000 of my total goal I can be confident about being able to afford to complete my program. Even a little help ($50?) can go a long way.

About Me

I was a weird kid, now an odd millennial theology student at Fuller Seminary. When I was a child I loved collecting snails, studying cats, and Egyptology. I also came to know the Lord at a very young age and was compelled to know him more deeply and personally, in part by asking tough questions:

How do I respond to God while experiencing evil?

How come people blamed Eve for the fall when Adam was there with her?

My old church (First Baptist of Alhambra) was a place where I flourished. Pastor Lee and my dad always encouraged my questions and demonstrated academic integrity by admitting when they did not have answers. As I got older I lost interest in snails (not cats!) and hieroglyphics, but continued to study, amassing large notebooks of research projects and reading books on the biblical canon, apologetics, exegesis, and the complete works of Josephus (light reading). I worked hard as an undergraduate at Biola (B.A. Biblical and Theological Studies) and my graduate degree at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (MDiv A.P. Research).

Now I am passionate about gender theology and understanding not just what a person’s interpretation of the Bible is, but WHY it is that way and HOW they arrive there.

Should I get funding, my dissertation will most likely pertain to the relationship between God, the Bible and the reader/listener while exploring the gender debate from new vantage points.

As many of you know, I have had my challenges as a woman in the theological world. At many points, I have had to defend my existence and unlike my childhood experience, I was not always welcome to question the prevailing thought. God and the insatiable desire to question and learn kept me going. I have passed the infamous German exam and am completing my 5th full-time Ph.D. course out of 12. The Ph.D. is the entry degree into the world of academia where I feel led to serve in combination with nonprofit advocacy work.

During this difficult time when I lost support for my  program, many of you told me to start a GoFundMe account wanting to help in any way you could. Even when I lost hope, you prayed and told me to keep up my fighting spirit. I am immensely thankful for your love and support and even one gift goes a long way. Thank you for this suggestion and for your faith.
