Dear Benjamin Banneker High School (DC) Alumni, Teachers, Parents, and Other Friends of Mine and Harrisonburg, Virginia Friends of Andrew:
I am writing on behalf of my good high school friend Andrew Olwangu Habwe, who stayed with Justin Peniston’s '89 family as an American Field Service (AFS) exchange student to Benjamin Banneker Model Academic High School (Washington, DC) from Kenya in the '88-'89 school year (Justin’s and my senior year at Banneker). For those who would like to reconnect with Andrew, please search for "Andrew Habwe" in FaceBook. He lost access to his old account “Andrew O. Habwe” when he left the USA.
FaceBook messenger is probably the easiest way to reach him if you would like to drop him a word of encouragement or catch up on old times. Andrew recently returned to Kenya upon the passing of his mother and has been struggling to stay afloat in a place he hasn't lived for 30 years! Andrew is located in a very rural area of Kenya (an 8 hour's drive from Nairobi and close to Lake Victoria and the border with Uganda). Andrew lives in Ebwali (part of Kakamega)--search for Ebwali School, Kenya on maps.google.com for an idea of the general vicinity.
Andrew rises with the sun and goes to bed relatively early as his solar/battery electricity only lasts a few hours into the evening . He can only use his phone for 3 hours every 24 hours.
The financial and emotional strain on him are very challenging right now. He has lost both parents and is struggling to try to improve his shelter--he likely needs to move at some point so he can properly bury his mother. He would like to come back to the US one day, but for now we want to get him back on his feet.
Would you please help out by donating to Andrew's gofundme? Gofundme will provide updates about amounts raised, and I pledge to meticulously document (screen shots) of periodic remittances (through sendwave). If you prefer, you can also ask me for his sendwave information to send him money directly.
Keep in mind that one US dollar currently equals 107 Kenyan Shillings, so even small amounts can help with expenses like food, farming supplies, and building materials. I have FB messaged Andrew extensively and spoken personally with him by phone for about 30 minutes (I do not recommend calling due to the per minute rate), because I wanted to ensure that it really was Andrew. It is--we reminisced impromptu about a lot of good times back in DC that only he and I know. He has sent me impromptu selfies.
He was overjoyed to know that even though the decades have passed, his friends from Banneker still have his back, and he dearly misses his friends and life in Virginia.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions by friending "Ari Rosner-Salazar" on FaceBook.
