The Backstory-
Andy McKenzie is a native of Macon, GA, but he and his family moved to Gray, GA when he was eleven. Andy graduated from Mt De Sales in Macon, GA and still regularly sees several of his elementary and
high school friends that remain in the area. Andy married his wife, Jeannie Jackson McKenzie, sixteen years ago in his “home” Church on Shurling Drive. They were blessed with their son, Jackson McKenzie,
13 years ago and he just finished the seventh grade at Gray Station Middle School.
Andy loves his home town and is very proud of the fact that now Jeannie has lived “here” longer than she has lived anywhere else in her 44 years, even though she would still tell you “home” is North
Carolina. Andy loves Middle GA and his family, he also loves UGA and believes Athens, GA is about as close as you get to Heaven on earth.
Andy is the operations manager at Allgood Pest Solutions and has worked there for 10 years. Jeannie will tell you she honestly believes that he loves his job, co-workers and customers almost as much as he
loves her. Andy and his family also have been members of Forest Hills United Methodist in Macon since 2008 and they have an indescribable love for Forest Hills and their Church family who have surrounded
them with love, support and prayers, which has become especially important in their journey this year.
The Problem-
On January 15 th , Andy went to have a routine colonoscopy, which turned into him having a foot of his colon removed on January 18 th and waking up to his wife and brother explaining to him that he had
Colon Cancer that had spread to his liver! On March 3rd as Andy, Jeannie and Andy’s Dad sat in the
oncologist office to hear the results of the many tests that had followed. That was the day it was official,
Andy had Stage 4 Colon Cancer that had metastasized to his liver. That is the day his fight officially
became our fight!
His Oncologist, Dr. Lennon, explained that Andy would begin a regimen of chemotherapy called folfox the next week and that he would remain on chemotherapy for the remainder of his life, unless he was a
candidate for liver surgery. He and his family would not even have the opportunity to meet with the liver surgeon until Andy had completed 5 full rounds of chemotherapy to see if the lesions on his liver
had shrunk. Andy decided he would continue to work while he was going thru Chemo and pray that it was God’s will that he would be a candidate for the liver surgery.
The opportunity to have the liver surgery would significantly increase his chances of survival.
The Solution-
Well here they are a few months later and guess what… He was in the 20% of people who qualify for this surgery! His surgeon, Dr. Cardona at Emory is confident that the spots of cancer on his liver could be
removed due to their location. He had liver resection and ablation surgery at Emory on June 12 th , 2019 to remove the six cancerous lesions. Now that surgery has been done, he will be out of work for 6 to 8 weeks and will have to resume chemo in July for another four months, but he will be starting the climb back up!
As you can imagine, he and his family have started to feel the burden of the medical expenses and lost wages. To date, before any adjustments and BEFORE the liver surgery they have received a whopping
total of 22 separate bills that total $42, 179.96. Once the final bills come in from the liver survey and hospital stay, they will have well over$100,000.00 in medical bills. Once their family out of network
deductible is met, some of those bills will be eligible for payment in full. Even though their bills well exceed our goal, if we can help them meet the deductible and relieve a little stress of lost wages and maintain normalcy for their son, it would be an enormous stress relief and true blessing! They still have a long road ahead and we want his fight to be our fight too!
