Today Ariel Pompiani is unable to communicate due to injuries sustained in a car accident. We seek funding to purchase a set of technological devices to enable Ariel to speak again and gain some independence.

In 2010, just after his 23rd Birthday, Ariel had a car accident and suffered a cranial trauma, a bruise in the brain stem. He almost died and as a result of the accident he has lost most of his mobility, is unable to speak, and through pulmonary complications is now only able to eat through a tube.

Ariel was an ambitious and smart young man studying marketing and business, but since the accident, he’s been unable to communicate his most basic requests.  His parents and sisters are only able to guess what Ariel wants or needs. They despair at not knowing how to communicate with him and attend to him.

His rehabilitation cannot go further without the ability to communicate.  The recommended solution for his condition is a Speech-Generating Device (SGD) using a combination of 3 input modes, touch control, eye control and NeuroNode invented by Australian of the Year nominee Peter Ford.  This technology will enable Ariel to communicate by speech generation, email, text etc. As well, it will enable him to gain some independence by enabling him control of lights and other electrical devices.

The cost of this technology is not covered under Ariel's car insurance or any other medical scheme in Argentina. The cost of the device is close to that of a small apartment in his town.

Ariel is now 33 years old and has been unable to communicate for a third of his life.  Without this device Ariel will remain in silence.

Our aim is to purchase the SGD for Ariel so he can connect with his loved ones and fully engage with the world around him.

Thank you for your donation. It does not matter how small the donation, your act of kindness will resonate in the hearts of all trying to improve Ariel's life.

My husband Phillip Waters and I, Cecilia Kugler, are organising this fund raising. I, Cecilia,  went to primary school with Silvia, Ariel's mother in Argentina.  We lost contact when I migrated to Australia 40 years ago. We reconnected through Facebook a couple of years ago and we were heartbroken to hear about her son, and imagined the  desperation of not being able to communicate with your own child or any loved one, and no possible solution in sight.
We knew of an Australian invention featured in an ABC documentary. Since then, we've had the appropriate medical assessments to ensure suitability for Ariel's condition. After a few funding setbacks, and unable to fund it through the medical benefits,  we are now appealing to our extended family and friends to help Ariel gain a new voice and some independence.

Once we achieve our funding goal, the money will be deposited into my account first, and I will be the individual responsible to purchase the Neuronode here in Australia and sending it to Argentina for Ariel's therapist to fit and calibrate it.
We can't wait to hear Ariel's new words or receive his emails. You may get him to thank you personally one day too.  With deep gratitude, we thank you.
