Introduction
Hello! My name is Aries Nuño and as you can tell from the title of this fundraiser, I am excited to announce that I have been accepted into the Master of Science in Public Health program at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health beginning Fall 2021! I would be pursuing my MSPH in the Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health with an academic focus on women's, sexual and reproductive health.
As you may know, Johns Hopkins is a well respected university that has contributed to many major initiatives in public health research; its reputable history, which continues today with the efforts made in addressing COVID-19, is one of the reasons why this masters program is my number one choice.
It may surprise you to hear that I was hesitant to share this information with my family. Opening an acceptance letter is a moment typically met with anticipation, the moment itself is even captured on camera sometimes. For me, however, my father, who is a self-made immigrant from Mexico and who I’ve grown to know to be very cautious with his finances, I knew his response would be this one question, “how much?” Completely unaware of Hopkins’ accolades and how to celebrate the moment, that is indeed the first thing he asked. Now surprisingly, after sitting with him and explaining all that I saw for myself and my professional future at this school he’s been offering his relentless support.
I’ve come to Gofundme with the optimism that I can garner some support from communities, near and far, to help me achieve this next step in higher education. I am excited to contribute to the modernizing advancements in public health, in resolving sexual and reproductive health barriers, as I prioritize improving health and wellbeing that transcends national borders.
(UNT Graduation, December 2018)
My Motivation
I received my Bachelor of Science in Public Health from the University of North Texas, where I also worked as a Peer Health Educator promoting the health and well-being of UNT students. Fortunately, I successfully graduated a semester early which gave me plenty of time to make preparations for my Peace Corps service that was beginning in September 2019. I was assigned to serve as an HIV/AIDS Youth Educator in Mohale's Hoek, Lesotho, where my projects focused on developing sustainable community efforts in addressing HIV/AIDS prevention and education interventions targeting adolescents, orphans, out-of-school youths, and other vulnerable populations.
Unfortunately, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I was evacuated and had to leave behind the work and all the relationships I had made. Nonetheless, reflecting on the time I spent in Mohale’s Hoek, Lesotho led me to recognize the valuable skills I can learn by earning my MSPH, so that I am better able to build culturally appropriate and sustainable interventions that support the resilience of at-risk communities.

How the money will be spent
All proceeds earned from this fundraiser will be used to support my tuition costs throughout the two year MSPH program. The current tuition rate is $57,456, which can be broken down to $14,364 per term for 4 terms as a full-time student. These costs do not include the additional Bloomberg school fees and the price of textbook materials that arise throughout the school year.
I have provided the link to the tuition and fees page on the JHSPH school website, for those interested in learning more of the specifics!
https://www.jhsph.edu/admissions/tuition-and-fees/index.html
Moreover, if I do accept this offer, I will be posting edits to this page with the receipts of the tuition bill to ensure full transparency.
Current Savings
My current savings for graduate school comes from money I’ve saved from part-time work, a readjustment allowance awarded by the Peace Corps (shortly after I was evacuated from Lesotho), and a Segal Education Award amounting to $4,000 having completed 2 terms of service with AmeriCorps. If I do accept the offer from Johns Hopkins, I qualify for some financial assistance during my second year of the program and, furthermore, I have also been looking into the possibility of earning an assistantship that will provide me with a source of income through part-time teaching or research with a professor from the university.

What I am up to now
I am currently serving as an AmeriCorps volunteer at a nonprofit in Mesquite, Tx called Sharing Life. My responsibilities are to assist with the Drive Thru Food Pantry service and co-coordinate a backpack food service program, designed for school-age children to receive food and school supplies during school breaks.
*The goal for this fundraiser is set to $57,456, primarily to document how far community efforts have helped in fulfilling my first year of tuition at Johns Hopkins.*
I know these are tough times for everyone so I encourage you to only donate what you can give; even the smallest amounts would be wholeheartedly appreciated.
