Atajan is the best friend of my brother Emil. Atajan is originally from Turkmenistan . My friends know that I am more a parent to Emil rather than a sister. 6 years ago I made one of the best decisions in my life and sent Emil to Cyprus to get his education. Atajan and Emil met while getting education in Lefke, Cyprus and became best friends. I know Emil’s best friends and spend time with them. Atajan became a family member. Hard working, cheerful, joyful and enthusiastic, loving life and full of future plans. He was the heart and soul of the company until the tragedy happened.
In August 8th, 2021 the tragedy took place, when his life was divided into “before” and “after”. As a result of an unsuccessful dive into the water, Atajan was hospitalized with a life-threatening injury, which at the time was not suspected by anyone on the spot, which may have made things worse.
What happened
After the jump, Atajan instantly faced total muscle function loss. Floating on the surface face down position for some time. It took a while for the friend to notice Atajan drowning in the water. Suffocating and causing more brain injury. So, Atajan was taken to the hospital with a diagnosis of asphyxia. Unfortunately, after the tomography the verdict was the most uneasy. His cervical-vertebral C5 - C6 region fracture was detected, with pressure and strong damage to the spinal cord. The surgery (bringing back of two adjoining spine bones in a line using plates) was done on the second day after admission, which, according to the surgeons, went much more successful than expected. After a week in the intensive care unit, Atajan was transferred to the general ward, where the main task was to cure pneumonia, which he developed as a result of asphyxia.
Atajan or Atashka ( how his friends call him) did a great job and we are very proud of him. After months spent in hospital he was transferred home half paralyzed and now learning basic life skills from the scratch.
Good news is Atajan has a chance to return to a normal life
The recommended treatment for Atajan is a comprehensive approach of intense physical strengthening with a physical therapist to build him back up and provide functional electrical stimulation. The amount needed 5000$ per month rehabilitation treatment (the minimum is 6 months) at one of the best medical centers of Turkey that family cannot afford and Atajan has been waiting for professional help for more than 8 months. Unfortunately, it is a waste of precious time…..
