Help Atlanta Radio Icon Steve McCoy

Steve McCoy of Star 94's 'Steve and Vikki in the Morning' Show is now on hospice, 15 years after being diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Steve and Vikki were THE SHOW visited by every A-list celebrity or anybody who was somebody (even Julia Roberts confessed to him she blow dried her hair for high school listening to him). For 18 years, Atlantans started their day with this wildly successful duo. They also raised millions of dollars for countless charities. Steve's wife says he could never say no to doing something for someone.
Steve's family has not asked for financial support but his longtime co-host Vikki Locke, who remains very close to Steve and his family, shared the catastrophic financial realities of caring for someone with a disease that often has a drawn-out decline. A caregiver comes for 8 hours so his wife can keep her job and their son is his other caregiver. Money is spent on the caregiver which is thousands per month, and multiple medications, some of which can cost over one thousand dollars per month with a coupon. Steve has suffered multiple falls, broken bones, dislocated shoulders and has endured surgeries.
Steve's wife told me she thought they did everything right. They worked and saved money. What she came to learn is what seemed like enough isn't when you're dealing with a slow neurodegenerative disease like Parkinson's. There is enough, until there isn't.
As for his quality of life, Steve's nights are filled with violent tremors and sweating. He has lost his famous radio voice and at best can whisper on some days. His hospital bed is set up so that he can look out his window and see the trees.
Steve's wife agreed to this GofundMe on the condition that any funds raised will be split 50/50 with a nonprofit that provides financial support for caregiving. We have chosen the Atlanta Neuroscience Foundation to receive the funds that will be used to help families with caregiving expenses.
As his radio co-host Vikki told me, "It’s hard describing a relationship that is longer than my marriage. I’ve watched his kids grow up. I’ve met his grandchildren. To see his body broken like this is gut-wrenching. Steve has two great loves…his family first, and radio. Entertaining Atlanta for decades gave him great joy as did helping the community. Now it’s our turn to give back.”
Steve McCoy helped thousands of people make it through another morning, five days a week for 18 years. At just 69 years old, we can help him. We can provide care and comfort in this last stage of his life.
Thank you. xoxo
