Help Aunt Vernie beat cancer!
A little about the couple....Laverne and Ron met 35 years ago and despite the age difference, they didn’t look like an odd couple. She was always a beautiful woman that could easily pass for 10 years younger and he looked “mature” and was always serious.
They moved from Arizona and started on a successful journey of traveling for work that they loved. They had their fur babies and each other and that’s all that mattered. Later, my Grandmother Mary Lorene McKeown’s health was failing and we saw what an amazing couple that they had become. They moved in and took care of Grandmother for over 5 years before she passed. The picture you see of Laverne and Ron on my Grandmothers birthday. They brought in tables and linens into her carport and truly made a special day for Grandma.
**Now...let’s talk about the current situation. We have seen Ron work 12 hour shifts all week long and go in on the weekends to “organize”. I have seen him start work at 3am. I have seen him commute daily through bad weather to get to his job. Recently he moved my Mom closer to her Doctors in Oregon. She had a pacemaker put in a few years ago and it along with her health has been very good since. He was working at a Dealership when he started to have some serious health problems himself. He has a hernia and really bad arthritic knees. He got to the point where he was unable to stand up so obviously he could not continue working in car sales and his Manager told him he was not cutting it because he could not keep up with the customers. He attempted to get on disability but because the hernia and knees are repairable he did not qualify.
Weeks into this the Coronavirus happened. While isolating they found out that my Mother has Cancer. It is a golf ball sized lump. The doctors are very hopeful and have elected to do radiation instead of a more radical surgery. It has a high success rate. She has been staying pretty positive considering all that is going on right now. Ron is scheduled for Hernia surgery today....5-20-20 and my Mom is scheduled for radiation on 6-2-20. He is her caretaker and totally devoted to her. It will be very difficult for them to do completely on their own without extra financial help.
The thing is that neither one of them would ever think of asking you for help. That’s why we as their family and friends are here to ask you to take a few moments and give what you can. Please help them through this difficult time as I know that if Ron is given the chance: He’s got this!
