Baby Mohamud needs an urgent surgical treatment, and his heart broken mother has been told he won’t be able to get the treatment in Somali. His only hope is to travel abroad to a country with advanced medical care. Below is a copy of the doctors discharge letter.

Baby Mohamud who lives with his mother and 5 siblings from small village in the Brava city of Somali, is born with serious spinal condition called myelomeningocele. A myelomeningocele is a defect of the backbonel (spine) and spinal cord. Before birth, the baby's spine, the spinal cord and the spinal canal do not form or close normally. A myelomeningocele is the most serious form of spina bifida.

Baby Mohamud is nearly 1month old and is already suffering with the condition as he picked an infection. He is in a lot of pain and his mother is unable to afford to buy the pain killers he requires.

Babies with Mohamud’s condition and live in countries with more advanced medical care get surgical treatment within 48hours of birth or even earlier (during pregnancy).

If untreated baby Mohamud will face:
- Problems moving parts of the body below in the back
- Lack of sensation in his legs and feet
- Poor or no bowel and bladder control
- Twisted or abnormal legs and feet
- Too much cerebrospinal fluid in the head
- Problems with how the back of brain formed causing problem with muscle movement (e.g. swallowing, walking, grabbing etc)
- Learning differences or delayed milestones
