On July 15, 2021, the family had just returned from a long day at Sonder Springs full of good food a fun in the sun and water. We decided to let our Mastiff out to use the bathroom in the front gated yard, immediately we realized that the grass was much too high from the last couple days of rain and needed to mow just to let the dogs out to use the restroom. We live on three acres in the country with a small gated yard attached to a deck next to our awing. After Daddy was done mowing the inside of the gated yard, he exited the inside of the yard and pulled around the fence towards the awing to finish up and put the mower away for the night.
I was standing on the deck with Russ and Prim our mastiff, she was laying behind me and Jimmy in the gated yard.
James was turning into the awing and had missed a small strip of grass right next to the awing and decided to back up. Looked at us on the deck and turn to look the opposite direction to see where Jimmy was. (Jimmy was coming around the fence from the other side of the yard).
It was in that moment Russ, Slides open the gate on the side of the deck behind me, Prim got spooked and bolted away knocking into Russell and I on the deck. Russ was rolled off of the deck, into the yard with his legs landing directly behind the reversing lawnmower.
James yelled at me and I instantly grabbed my baby, flipped him upside-down, stuck my hand in the open wound plugging his veins on the leg that was cut off. James screamed and called the cops as I ran 350ft to my mother's back door. When my family opened the door, I stressed that I needed dads leather belt and extension cords Now.
I sat down in the wheelchair outside the back door and we attached all the tourniquets as best as we could and snitched them down. As the cops arrived, the ambulance followed, they informed us that we would have to be life flighted and to rush to the Air strip nearby.
James and Russ, road in the Ambulance together and I followed. When I arrived at the air strip, James was so distraught with guilt and emotion that I had to take over and fly with Russ to Nortons Childrens Hospital in Louisville, KY.
INSERT PIC OF INJURIES COMING!
This accident has resulted in the complete loss of his right leg and severely damaged his left leg and foot. Unfortunately, his prognosis remains guarded for a full recovery of his remaining limb and foot.
Russ remains hospitalized awaiting several surgeries over the coming weeks. Due to the severity of his injuries, his journey will require multiple surgeries, extensive therapy managed in stages and will face a very long road to recovery.
As a young family with 4 young kids, we as most young parents were unprepared to deal with such a tragic situation are struggling with basic needs through this horrific accident. We are taking the necessary steps to ensure not only are we fighting for Russ to recover but that of our families as this is traumatic for anyone to experience. The hospital is at least an hour from their home and any other family members.
We are asking for help in raising funds to cover medical bills, transportation, the costs of on-going medical needs, a van and to buy a home suitable to his physical limitations. Also, donations will his current and on-going care, prosthetic devices, and VAN to accommodate a wheelchair to take him to his appointments along with any other needs that may arise while he begins his long road to recovery. Any support to help Russell walk again and get a chance to enjoy our beautiful world would be SO greatly appreciated.
