HELP BARNEY TO SEE AGAIN
Once again we find ourselves in a crisis situation with the arrival a couple of weeks ago of this dear little man who we have called Barney.
Very soon after arrival we discovered that he had severe cataracts. In order for Barney to regain his sight we must take him to an equine clinic in England which specialises in eye care.
The surgery, aftercare and transportation are going to be a huge drain on sanctuary resources particularly coming at the beginning of the winter feeding season.
We need your help to give this brave little man a chance to lead a normal life.
Barney was found abandoned on a hillside near Limavady. Luckily he was found by two very kind and compassionate ladies who looked after him and organized transport for him to the safety of the sanctuary.
He was very sad and depressed and refused to interact with either his human carers or any of the other donkeys. He preferred to stand quietly alone with his ears forward at all times. This was the first indicator that he had great difficulty seeing normally. A visually impaired donkey will often hold their ears forward and use their hearing to compensate for their lack of vision.
Barney has had extensive ultrasound scans and blood tests and he has been deemed suitable for the surgery.
A cataract operation is a major operation on an equine and he will have to spend at least ten days in intensive care before slowly making the long journey home.
We we are hoping to raise these funds as soon as possible as he needs this operation urgently to prevent the situation from worsening. A common complication with cataracts is the onset of glaucoma and any extended delay could result in total and irreversible blindness for this brave little man.
Please help us to help Barney. We can only imagine the trauma that he has already endured. The terror of cruel treatment, hunger and loneliness endured in almost complete darkness with no awareness of approaching danger.
He deserves the opportunity to lead a happy, healthy and contented life.❤️
Thank you for taking the time to read Barney’s story.
