Help Bartpup Get Urgent Dental Surgery
Donation protected
Hi there, I'm Raka (or Oakes) and my dog Bartlett needs dental surgery + updated bloodwork by mid-October. Bart's almost 12 years old, and has been the steadfast anchor and love of my life for the past decade after I adopted her. We don't know her exact history, but she came to me a scared, underweight 2 year-old pitmix who flinched at any sudden movement or unexpected sound. As a person with cptsd, among other fun nervous-system wonks, Bart and I formed an immediate bond. I joke that we're equally "velcro" creatures - she refuses to let me out of her sight, but I will equally go to any length to keep her as close as possible at all times.
When I adopted her, she already had some dental issues built up from being on her own, and she's had smaller procedures over the years to help correct what we can for those. In the past year, however, a mass has appeared on Bart's gumline that the vet is unable to identify or biopsy without a sedation visit. We functioned for the first half of the year on a "We'll schedule a biopsy if her behavior or eating pattern changes because of this mass" standard. ...Then a second mass showed up on the other side of her mouth.
This time, our vet has strongly recommended a more proactive approach as she's officially a Senior Dog - this means a full sedated hospital visit, the standard dental cleaning, biopsy of both masses, at least one near-certain extraction of a tooth that's been on our radar for a while now, and the possibility of up to 3 more extractions once they're able to get in there for a proper analysis. This plus bloodwork that's due by the end of October at the latest - Bart becomes terrified when needles come out at the vet, and I'm desperately hoping we can use the sedated surgery time to collect bloodwork to make it easiest on the old girl.
The projected cost for the surgery is around $2400 at minimum and $3500 maximum based on the estimate our vet sent - which I'm more than happy to share if needed -, with further costs for future upkeep. I'm currently on medical leave from my full-time job, but even working full-time I don't make a liveable wage and would not be able to provide care for Bart on my own. Please consider donating if you can - my dog is the unwavering light of my life, and I am committed to giving her the best last years of her life I'm able to. Thank you from the deepest parts of my heart for any help you're willing to share. <3
