Rescuing Belize Botanic Gardens
Belize Botanic Gardens , due to the Covid-19, Pandemic, has been without its main sources of income since March 2020 when the country closed to tourism. Our
borders and airport continue to be closed with no definite opening date.
We need your help!
Our operating income is derived mainly from entrance
fees and guided walks for visitors and hosting international students to overnight
here and study native flora. We offer gardeners' training and host thousands of local school children from all levels. Together we support this precious environment!
BBG employs and trains local men and women and without the ability to pay our
staff, our important conservation work will fall behind. There are eight families in
harm's way of unemployment. We will use your donation to help pay salaries,
maintain the grounds and continue our vitally important plant records.
Belize Botanic Gardens is the oldest existing Botanic Garden in Belize and one of the few organic botanic gardens in the world. In order to survive the current economic
situation funding is urgently needed. We cannot afford to lose our highly
trained staff and the community and country cannot afford to lose such an
important endeavor.
Our goal of $100,000 will get us through the year and hopefully by that time students will be able to return to school and tourists will eagerly return to Belize.
Belize Botanic Gardens started as a passion project for Ken and Judy duPlooy in
1993 when they began transforming a farm in the Cayo District into a tropical
garden. Today, Belize Botanic Gardens has blossomed into a 45 acre
botanic garden which proudly grows hundreds of plant species, both native and
exotic and maintains collections of palms, cycads and native orchids. This green
space is not only important for plant conservation, but is also home to
abundant species of birds, reptiles, insects and animals.
Are you able to support our critical efforts? Donations of any amount are much
appreciated and will be used efficiently and effectively. We invite you to visit us
when travel to Belize is again possible.
