Help Ben Battle Leukemia

Donation protected
If there was ever a time for a community to come together and support one of our own, the time is now!   Renee Hosang's eldest child,  Benjamin, was diagnosed with T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
Benjamin is your typical teenage boy.  He loves to play basketball, video games and sports.  He is a 10th grade student at First Colonial high school and is just starting to find his path.  He is tall, wears glasses and has crazy curly hair!
Ben started sleeping a lot.  What teenage boy doesn't?  But then, he had a swollen lymph node on his neck and started snoring.   It was allergy season.  Pretty normal to have a cold with allergies in the spring.  But Renee, his mom, had better instincts.  When the worst of allergy season was over, yet Ben continued to snore, and theswollen lymph node did not go away, she knew something was wrong.  When the pediatrician said his strep test was negative and his mono test was negative, Renee pushed for answers.  The CHKD urgent care ran blood work.  When the results returned abnormal, they told Renee to take her 15 year old so , Ben, straight to CHKD emergency room!  That next morning, Ben received his first chemotherapy injection.  Despite the nausea,  he remained strong and brave through each of the procedures he had next.  Despite learning that he had T-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, he remained strong and brave.  He remained in the hospital for the next 5 days with his mom, Renee, at his side.  His dad and 3 younger siblings remained home, continued his to work and go to school and had help from grandma who came up from Florida.
Over the next 5 days, Renee learned that T-cell ALL is the rarest form of childhood leukemia.  She also learned that Ben will need chemotherapy treatment for the next THREE and 1/2 YEARS!!  Through the rest of his high school years , through graduation, through his 1st year of college.
But Renee also learned something else.  Her family's medical insurance had lapsed due to a glitch in the electronic payments.  Her family had recently purchased and moved into a new home.  Mail got mixed up and delayed, and the banks electronic checks were not processed by the insurance company.
Renee is a part time assistant professor of sociology at TCC, but she is a full-time mother of 4, devoted spouse to Marlon, and a full-time volunteer for her children's schools.  She devotes her time giving back, serving on PTA boards as Treasurer at Alanton Elementary School and co- vice president of Lynnhaven Middle School PTA, serving on committees at Tidewater Community College, substitute teaching with the Virginia Beach Public School System, volunteering for classroom parties, school dances, book fairs, running copies for teachers.  Watching her live her life exhausts me!  But Renee does it all with a warm smile on her face, a green tea in her hand and the patience of a saint.  She never complains, never looks tired and is always available for an encouraging pep talk.   For her, remaining spiritual, continuing to meditate and remain positive allows her to focus, to remain calm and restore her strength.  Her family is amazing.  The kids are adorable and super athletic.  Marlon is a hard worker and would do anything for his kids...even offer to work 7 days a week, so Renee can be available to take Ben to all of his doctors appointments.
We all know how the current health system is.  And even when Ben's Medicaid goes into effect, there will still be mounds of doctor bills, hospital bills, laboratory fees, medicine costs.  Not to mention driving him back and forth weeks on end for chemotherapy, missing work, child care for the other children.
Please help the Hosang family during this challenging time by easing the financial burden it is going to have on them.  The last thing any parent in this situation should be thinking about is finances.  The initial goal set here is to allow Renee and Marlon the peace of mind to continue prioritizing what matters most - their children.  If you are able to give  a gift of any amount, it will help fill in the gaps as the bills start to accumulate and will continue to provide for them a cushion as treatments stretch on.
I can't thank you enough, and the Hosangs graciously thank you for your generosity from the bottoms of our hearts.
Sincerely, Mindi
(Renee, Marlon, Ben, Jochima, Samuel and Gabriel)
