WHO ARE WE?
Hello everybody!
We’re Ben Maimin and Brian Tran, a 32-year old couple living in Jersey City, NJ, right across the river from Manhattan. We’ve been married for 4 years and together for 10. Ben works in the music industry and Brian runs his own coaching practice.
WHAT’S GOING ON?
We’re having a baby! Well...we’re working on it. Like many gay couples, we face some hurdles when it comes to having children. Before we dive into our journey, we would like to acknowledge that all fertility journeys and pregnancies are challenging in their own right. Our goal is to shed some light on our process as a gay couple who has chosen surrogacy as a way to grow their family.
HOW MUCH IS IT?
In the United States, the ballpark cost of gestational surrogacy for a gay male couple can be greater than $150,000. The IVF portion alone can cost up to $50,000. One key point to highlight is that two men going through IVF are not usually eligible for insurance coverage. Most couples going through IVF have the diagnosis of infertility, which allows insurance to cover most, if not all, of the costs. Unfortunately, this doesn’t apply to us.
The reason why this process is so challenging is that it requires the majority of this cost to be paid upfront. As of last year, through our own long-term savings, grants we’ve received, and the generosity of our families, we had been able to set aside a large portion of this expense.
OUR GOAL
We need help. We have been working at this for years, but like so many of you, COVID has taken a hard hit on our finances. Both of our industries were devastated by the pandemic, which ate up a large portion of the nest egg that we’d put aside for our surrogacy journey. We are very fortunate that we were able to relocate and weather much of the storm, and we’ve been working really hard at rebuilding our savings.
We are SO close to being able to start our journey and see it through to the end. All we need is some assistance to help cover the final chunk of these large upfront expenses.
We are confident we will be fantastic parents to our future child and we know we can provide them with a wonderful life.
It is with great humility and deep gratitude that we are asking you to help us cross the finish line and bring our baby home. Any contribution would be transformative, and we can’t express our appreciation enough.
All our love,
Brian & Ben
