The kids of Bill and Jolene Stepp are raising money to help with the large amount of medical Bill's that are coming in. Daddy, Bill, has basically been hospitalized since January 7, 2021 and is now in rehab. During the hospital stay, hes undergone several surgeries as well. They have lost his income and Jolene has had to leave work as well. Daddy,Bill, has served and protected Springdale as a police officer for almost 40 years. He's been a great friend to all. Momma and daddy would never ask for help, so us kids are asking. Any blessing will help. We appreciate and love each one of you and thank you in advance.
Bill's journey:
Thursday January 7, 2021, he started bleeding from his nose and mouth. It looked like a murder scene. We called 911 and he was admitted and taken to surgery immediately. They fixed the bleeding arteries and had to place him on the ventilator for 2 days. They then discovered he had COVID. Something he was terrified of getting. He was able to come home a few days later.
He done good at home until the early morning on January 18, 2021. He started bleeding again. This time, it was worse than ever. He was again admitted immediately and they did another surgery. During this time, he went into respiratory failure. He was placed on the ventilator again. They had no COVID rooms, so he was transported to Bentonville Northwest. He stayed on the ventilator another 5 days. They were having a hard time getting him off it. They were finally successful getting him off, Friday January 22, 2021. They kept him in ICU. Dad's mental status was not well. He presented himself as one would worh alzheimers. The doctors told us it could be COVID brain or ventilator brain. Dad got rid of the COVID and they suggested rehab so he can learn to walk and get stronger since he lost 40lbs !!
He was transported to the Maples on Thursday January 28, 2021. The next 4 days were hell. We could only see him by looking through his room window. They mistreated him in so many ways. The family decided that he needed to come home and get home health to come in and do his PT. We picked him up on Monday February 1, 2021. Such an amazing day! He was very frail and still not making sense when having conversations. The next couple days he didn't want to eat or drink much. He had no energy or strength.
On Friday February 5, 2021, he started have extreme side and belly pain. The home health was here to evaluate him. He saw the amount of pain he was having and suggested we call 911 again. They took him and found that the pain was caused by kidney stones. On Sunday February 7, 2021 he had surgery to break the stones up. He continued to stay in the hospital. Yet again, he didnt eat or drink. He was now down to 137lbs. 50lbs lost since the start. His mind was still in and out. The dr. asked if he had any demita before this. Well, for years , we have seen dad's mind slipping some. They said all of this could have really brought out the demita. So, he is now diagnosed with mild demita. They also discovered he had a blood fungal infection. They said it was hospital acquired. They said he can be discharged, but we had to hook him up once a day to the IV antibiotics. So, he came home Friday February 12, 2021. Over the next 2 weeks, he got the antibiotics and still refused to eat or drink. He was slipping away from us. We started coming to terms that he was dying. He turned grey and looked awful.
We called the home health nurse because he was having a hard time swallowing. The nurse said he needs to be seen in ER. Well, here we go again. Friday February 26, 2021 he was admitted again. He was severely dehydrated, malnourished due to not eating or drinking. On Monday March 1, 2021 they did a swallow test on him. It showed his epiglottis isnt closing, so everything he eats or drinks is being aspirated into his lungs. They placed him on a strict nothing by mouth plan. On Tuesday March 2, 2021, they placed a temporary nasal feeding tube in him. He kept that in until Monday March 8, 2021. On this dat, he had surgery to place a PEG feeding tube in him. He became stable and was moved downstairs to the rehab floor. He is currently working hard on learning to walk, swallow, and take care of himself. We are praying in 4 to 6 weeks, he has fixed his epiglottis and can finally eat.
