OUR FLOOR JOISTS WERE CAVING IN!! At first we only knew of the kitchen and dining area tile cracking and breaking up. Eventually we could hear noises as we walked on the hall and bedroom floors. Then the master bath tiles started to buckle and crack. It was time to do something only we didn't know just how bad. This took place over four years and during that time a lot of hospitalization and care of my husband was taking place as well.
Finally we contacted four contractors and discovered our floor joists had so much water damage from Hurricane Florence, old termite and untreated wood damage that they were about to cave in. We contacted the insurance company only to discover nothing was covered? So why did we have insurance?
We finally settled on a very good company and feel very confident they will do exactly as needed to prevent further damage, especially to the walls as they could also be damaged during the renovation.
All the dishes, photos, furniture, curtains were removed; anything on the wall had to be removed due to dust etc., and finally, the work started January 4th, 2021 with the expectation of it being completed by end of January. It now looks like at least early March before we can return.
So far Lowe's bill for lumber is over $3200. and we have given $4000 so far to the contractor. In addition and due to Bob's disability we had to find a place to stay so we are out of pocket for that amount as well as it required ramps to be built in order for him to obtain access.
Bob, my husband has suffered two strokes and I am primary (and only) caregiver. We receive no financial nor personal help from anyone except a visit by one sibling. Bob's mobility chair is his only mode of travel which wouldn't work with the bedrooms being torn apart (photo is of master bedroom) so we had to move out of the house while the floors (floor joists) are removed and replaced.
We have no choice but to have this done. Having help within the community via friends and neighbors will help with this cost. We are in debt already due to this and there is still over 1200 sq ft to be done. It would be a blessing indeed if we were to get support.
