Come Flower, Come Flame: A New Movement Driven Play
Written by multi-hyphenate artist Tori Bogacki, "Come Flower, Come Flame" is a radical and moving tale of reclaiming the femme body through grief.
The play is being performed as part of The Emerging Artists Theatre (EAT) Spark Theatre Festival NYC, a three-week-long festival of new, self-produced work.
Synopsis:
J moves back through time to find her younger self, L, frozen in grief over the recent death of her father. While in mourning, L’s grief is sexualized by men, echoing an inner conflict: “am I meant to be frozen?” As J dances with the memory of a time since past, she encourages L's journey from the frozen towards the flame: from loss into love, and from what grieving ‘ought to look like’ into an ownership which transforms the body and the soul.

Why This Play? Why Right Now?
We're in a moment in time culturally where femme bodies and experiences are constantly being co-opted by the male gaze and by patriarchal power. This play offers a message of hope and empowerment to femme and queer people, while also navigating the complications of grief. We hope to offer our audience release, freedom, and catharsis.
“We cannot buy back the past, no matter how hard we try. But we can slowly ease the aching. We follow the flame, go to the fire, and we live on. We heal, through hope, through living.”
- “Come Flower, Come Flame” by Tori Bogacki
