Help Bring Mikey's Seizure Alert Dog Home

Hi! I’m Taylor and I’m fundraising to get my son Mikey a seizure alert/ service dog.

When Mikey was born he suffered a stroke which caused hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). This is a brain injury that can occur in full-term infants before, during, or shortly after birth when the brain doesn't get enough oxygen or blood flow. It's a serious birth complication that affects the central nervous system and can cause neurological or developmental problems.

In Mikey’s case, his injury caused seizures and he suffers from medication resistant epilepsy.

Mikey’s epilepsy has no known triggers or auras (meaning we have no warning before he has a seizure) and over the last 3 and a half years he’s progressively gotten worse. He had a study done in November so the doctors could capture his brain waves during a seizure and we could learn more about them and how to better treat his disorder. During the study we learned he had multiple types of seizures and that he stops breathing when he has a seizure that generalizes.

Mikey also has a bleeding disorder (von Willebrands disease) that causes his blood not to clot properly which also makes his seizures more dangerous and a bigger risk for a brain bleed, which can also be deadly. He’s been hospitalized for this in the past because he hit his head while falling during a seizure.

His neurology and epileptology teams agree that for his safety he should get a seizure alert dog. They’re not cheap but really I can’t put a price on my child’s safety.

We have a trainer in Texas working on his pup (Maple) already and she could come home to us in as soon as mid July (the 17th) as long as we can come up with the funds for her.
