On March 20th my son Cody Brandon Vargas had an accident in Costa Rica . As a result of his accident he sustained multiple injuries .
I did not know any thing about the accident until April 2 and when I was contacted by the U.S. embassy .
I immediately flew to Costa Rica and saw was informed of Codey's injuries: severe head trauma, collapsed right lung, multiple rib fractures, paralyzed intestines, pneumonia, fractured bilateral orbits and multiple abrasions all over his body.
Because of all the sustained injuries Codey required an immediate craniotomy to relieve pressure from the brain, an immediate tracheotomy, respirator to sustain life, chest tube due to pneumo thorax , pneumonia, surgery to remove part of skull to reduce severity of brain swelling, total parenteral nutrition, and now naso gastric enteral feeding, Foley catheter.
Codey slipped into a coma shortly after receipt at the emergency department and has been kept in that state due to the severity of brain swelling. He has since opened his eyes but is unaware of his surroundings the doctors call it the second stage of coma which is "vegetative state", but he is progressing.
I am truly grateful for what the doctors have done to save Cody's life , but now moving forward Cody needs more care which is unable to be obtained in Costa Rica. Codey has been laying in a hospital bed for 30 days without any movement of his body other then occasional turn and positioning. He suffers from continuous pneumonia due to the lack of movement, and other complications. This hospital does not have therapy department which is crucial in Codeys state. The pneumonia will persist , and his muscles are quickly breaking down.
Codey requires a pulmonologist this Hospital does not have one. Being a nurse myself I know the the dentramental risk and complications that are involved and inevitable if Codey remains in this hospital.
I am still in Costa rica, I have made many representations to various institutions as well as to the Embassy and the VA because my son is a war veteran. However I have been in Costa Rica for approximately 15 days and I have not yet been able to obtain help regarding logistics nor have I received financial help to transport my son from Costa Rica to the United States on a hospital or medical plan because my financial resources are limited.
Currently I am communicating with the Embassy, the Senate, and Congress to find a way to transport my son on a hospital plane. The process has been slow, and I am still waiting for one of these institutions to help move my son back to the U.S. I have also reached out to multiple agencies foreign medical , VA, trans com. private aircrafts, and I've exhausted all of my resources and I am to the point of desperation.
Codey served in the Army National Guard he was deployed to Kuwait in 2014 upon Codey's return he was granted an honorable discharge due to injury.
This accident was not during active duty, the reason for my mention is that Codey is a Veteran , he fought for our country , he fought for lives and now Codey needs" "us" our country to fight for his.
LETS BRING CODEY HOME !!
