Why We Need Your Help!
The past two years have been extremely difficult for my father Mustafa Sharif, in addition to the other huge challenges he’s been facing he is now battling cancer. If you know my father you know that he pushes through adversity and tries to lighten everyone else’s load even at his own expense. He was not raised to ask for help. He was raised to be a help. He battles through on his own with the will to beat whatever challenge he is facing.
Unfortunately, cancer is an expensive battle to fight and and as the sole breadwinner in a family business he is not even able to rest and heal. He still gets up before light and jumps in his truck to work through the pain of a much needed hip replacement, that must also wait until he has completed cancer treatment. It is painful to watch our aging father go back in to work even the day after chemo. But he does not have the luxury of rest.
We, his family, have been fighting this battle with him, taking on some of the financial burdens, cooking nutrient rich meals, juicing, praying, hoping screaming back into the darkness of this monster we are facing. But this is very difficult to do alone. Many of you have asked how you can help and up until now we have only asked for your prayers and we had hoped that prayer was all that we would have to ask for. But the financial burden of this battle is greater than he can bear alone and we are now asking for the community’s help in this fight. I invite you to help this beautiful man continue his work on this planet by contributing to help defray the costs of his treatment so that he can concentrate on healing.

If you choose to help, I want you to know who you are helping. If you know my dad, you know that he is a beautiful human being. I know this because I hear you say it. But you may not know that Mustafa Sharif is also a super-hero. He’s always pushed the boundaries of human capacity. Whether that capacity is in human kindness or physical ability. I’m not just saying that because he’s my dad. Let me tell you some unbelievable stories that all happen to be true. These stories are some of what convinced me that my father is in fact a superhero.
SUPER-HERO
Years ago, when I was a young child, on his way home from working, my father saw a house on fire. There were distressed people standing outside yelling that there were children inside, but they were waiting for the fire department to arrive. They felt helpless. Those children
were probably going to die in that fire waiting for help. My father acted
immediately, kicking in the door, and running in to save the children. He did not think of his own safety, he thought of those children. There are so many stories of my father neglecting his own safety to save someone else, like the time he saw a man attacking a woman and grabbed a wrench for protection, jumped out of his truck and stood between the man and the woman until the man left, and he escorted the distraught woman in his truck to safety.
GIVING BACK
My father also believes in giving back, and he led by example. He taught the children of our community karate, and took the neighborhood boys, many of whom lacked strong male role models, on camping trips with our family, becoming the second father, uncle, mentor that they needed. He provided employment for them right within their own communities and engendered within them a sense of love and humanity. These experiences with him had a lasting effect on them, and even now, as adults, the children that my father taught, or mentored still love him and often share with us their fond memories of these
experiences. I know that my work, in community development, and youth mentorship, comes directly from the values instilled in my youth by my father. And in his tradition of giving, I invite you again to help this beautiful man continue his work on this planet by contributing to help defray the costs of his treatment so that he can concentrate on healing.
