PLAYHOUSE EAST: A HOME FOR CREATIVITY IN THE HEART OF EAST LONDON
Nestled in Haggerston, East London, Playhouse East is a beacon for emerging voices in theatre, film, and the performing arts. Founded by husband-and-wife team James Alexandrou and Avital Lvova, this vibrant creative hub embodies a shared vision: to create an accessible, nurturing space where innovative storytelling and artistic collaboration can flourish.
OUR HISTORY: SIX YEARS OF OPENING DOORS TO THE ARTS
Since 2018, Actors East, our innovative acting studio, has worked tirelessly to break down barriers to the arts. Through affordable, high-quality training programs and our ‘Pay What You Can’ rehearsal space scheme, we’ve subsidized over 8,000 hours of studio time, giving hundreds of unfunded artists and theatre companies the chance to create, develop, and perform groundbreaking work.
Actors East has championed:
- Community workshops that foster local talent and encourage participation in the arts.
- Actor training programs that provide professional pathways for emerging performers.
- Writing development courses that amplify new and underrepresented voices.
We’ve been proud to feed London’s creative culture with bold, original ideas and outstanding talent—but the demand for our work has outgrown our current space.
OUR AMBITION: THE PLAYHOUSE AT PLAYHOUSE EAST
With the launch of Playhouse East, our journey has reached an exciting new chapter. This creative arts hub features rehearsal studios, a café/bar event space, and now, our 100-seat new writing theatre, The Playhouse, which will allow us to fulfil our ambition to become the home of groundbreaking new writing in the heart of London's East End.
At Playhouse East, we’re tackling the lack of resources and opportunities for artists head-on. In today’s economic climate, where access to the arts is increasingly limited, we endeavour to use this space to further support our acting community. Giving artists time, space, and support to develop their work and provide a platform for bold, essential stories by foster creativity at every stage—from the initial spark of an idea to fully funded productions.
With our limited resources we have already produced many successful jazz, cabaret and comedy gigs in our downstairs space and this month we are soft launching The Playhouse with our inaugural in house production Casserole. More tickets and more details can be found below:
WHAT WE NEED: YOUR HELP TO FINISH THE PLAYHOUSE
Our theatre space is nearly complete, but we urgently need your help to make it fully functional. To realize our vision, we need to finish essential building works, including:
- Sourcing and installing theatre lighting.
- Sourcing and installing a sound system.
- Sanding and varnishing the flooring.
- Building dressing rooms and other vital building works
Total Cost: £37,950
Your support will not only help us in furthering out completion of The Playhouse but also fund the staff needed to run this transformative space and ensure that pathways into the arts remain open to all.
Actors East has always run with community at its heart. If you know of anyone who can help us practically or has knowledge/expertise of theatre building works we would love to speak to you. Please don't hesitate to reach out.
