Help Build Makoko's First Toilet

Donation protected
As a strong advocate for maintaining good personal hygiene in line with the Sustainable Development Goals 3 (SDG) {good health and wellbeing}, I began to research ways I could help contribute to creating awareness around related issues and also providing solutions to the issues these problems might pose on the society as a whole.

In my research, I observed and discovered a case which I consider worrisome in the Makoko community. It might interest you to know that Nigeria hosts what is known as the world’s largest floating slums in MAKOKO Lagos state. It is indeed a slum in full view, and spreads out beneath the most travelled bridge in West Africa’s megalopolis. Yet this city on stilts, whose residents live under the constant threat of eviction under one of the world’s most terrible living conditions is indeed a ticking bomb waiting to explode.

The air here is very polluted as majority of the cities smoked fish comes from here. With no waste management system or proper infrastructure, it is very difficult to nurture proper personal hygiene in this kind of environment. It would be almost impossible to contain an Ebola epidemic in this community, causing a serious pandemic and threat to the health of the world.

Due to the lack of a proper sewage system, members of this community defecate, urinate, and shower right into the water where the kids of the community often play in. I decided to initiate and partner with like minded people that share similar objectives to build the first set of toilets within the Makoko community.

With your partnership and support, I intend to build a borehole for drinkable water and toilets for the Whanyinna Nursery and Primary School in the Makoko community. The toilet installation is estimated to take a month to build and we intend on starting work in the first week of March.

Your support will also be put towards raising awareness about the living conditions of these people and the poor hygiene maintained due to lack of awareness and sensitization. This is the first step in the direction of reducing the water pollution issue in the community. Please know that every dollar matters and no amount is too small.
