Help Build Mapleridge's Heart: The Community House

A Community House for Mapleridge

We are Building D4 Community and Strength in Unity, a 501(c)(3) non-profit and its affiliated neighborhood association located in the Mapleridge neighborhood on Detroit's east side. It's a neighborhood that was badly damaged economically in the early 2000s by drugs, crime and the great recession. But the neighborhood still contains passionate residents dedicated to rebuilding Mapleridge and surrounding neighborhoods into a self-sufficient, vibrant, wonderful place to live. BD4C and SIU are leaders in this journey, focusing on building the community, eliminating blight and crime, creating local economic opportunity and rebuilding affordable housing. We are new and small, but have the energy and commitment to lead the transformation of our community.

MIRICALES HAPPEN! Earlier this year SIU's Vacant House/Vacant Land committee helped an out-of-state homeowner deal with a squatter problem in an empty Mapleridge residential property she owned and intended to sell. She was so thankful and impressed that rather than sell the house she donated it to Building D4 Community! This creates an awesome opportunity for BD4C to add a much needed Community House to Mapleridge. Our intent is to provide the community with a place that feels like home where we can cook community meals, hold meetings and classes, do laundry, access the internet with provided laptops, printers and scanners, and have a reliable source of electricity during neighborhood power outages. When finished it will provide a special resource in the heart of Mapleridge.

HOWEVER, our Community House needs a complete makeover, inside and out, for it to reach its potential. Our goal in this campaign is to raise $20,000 by October 1, 2024 to use to begin the exterior rehab. This is about half of what we will need, but it will get us started working on:

  • an electrical connection to the main line
  • new roof
  • new gutters
  • new soffits
  • exterior doors
  • windows
  • new vinyl siding
  • porch & brick repairs, and
  • a new sewer pipe connection to the main sewer (a necessity with Detroit houses of this age)

Please become part of the Mapleridge community by donating to the Mapleridge Community House rehab project. Every donation matters - thank you!
