Meet the Founder & Our Mission
Hi, my name is Joel Savary, and I am on a mission to make history by building the first-ever Black-owned ice rink and ice-skating museum in the United States, right here in Washington, D.C. As a longtime advocate for expanding access to ice sports, I have dedicated my career to introducing new communities to skating, coaching athletes at the highest levels, and creating opportunities for those who have historically had limited access to the sport.
My work has engaged K-12 schools and colleges, including launching groundbreaking programs that have brought ice skating to new audiences. Through my organization, I’ve helped introduce thousands of young people to ice sports and provided pathways for them to learn, compete, and succeed.
My efforts have been recognized nationally, and I’ve been featured on PBS, The Kelly Clarkson Show (most recently—where I shared my vision for the first Black-owned ice rink and skating museum), The New York Times, and more for my work in growing the sport and ensuring more people have access to it.
Now, I’m taking this mission to the next level—creating a world-class ice rink and skating museum that will serve as a hub for community engagement, youth programs, and cultural preservation. This space will celebrate the contributions of Black athletes in skating, offer opportunities for aspiring skaters, and bring a fresh, exciting attraction to D.C.
