Let me introduce our cousin Adelyn.
She has just turned 10 years old! This is an incredible milestone considering all the things this mighty and resilient girl has experienced to date. All of us are so very proud of the remarkable "tween" she is becoming. Adelyn lives with a rare underlying genetic condition that impacts almost every body system. She was born with a fragile airway, and despite surgeries, this continues to impact her ability to manage the common cold and other respiratory viruses. Adelyn also lives with a life-threatening seizure disorder, heart issues, and physical and intellectual disability. While these pieces of her identity make her vulnerable her parents, Wouter and Monique, are unwavering in their promise to offer her experiences and a childhood marked with joy. Everyone who is lucky enough to know Adelyn is humbled by her genius, her tenacity, her old soul, her loving personality, her adventurous spirit and her giant hugs!
We want Adelyn to keep thriving by lending our support to her family, who is committed wholeheartedly to making the next ten years of her life and beyond, accessible and adventurous. She is a growing girl, so it is getting much harder for her parents to lift her into their car and they no longer have space for a larger wheelchair to fit. We don't want her life limited by a transportation barrier, and this is becoming a real impeding risk. What they need is a modified van! As with any disability-related equipment, the purchase and maintenance costs are extremely high. The cost of what they need can reach $100,000.
Historically in Alberta, a handful of charitable organizations have supported families with this type of need in a more direct and focused way, however this is no longer the case. Adelyn's parents have been told repeatedly that they are on their own to raise funds. Their employer health benefits do not cover vehicle modifications. Adding complexity, an individual cannot fundraise in the same ways that non-profits, school groups, sporting groups and charities can.
Wouter, Monique, Adelyn and Adrian are the strongest family I know. They are caring, supportive, and intelligent as they quietly go about their lives doing everything they are capable of to lovingly support their daughter. They persevere, no matter what obstacles come their way, without complaint. They do all of this with limited assistance and some days are very difficult for them. Sometimes I wonder how they manage. This is where we all come in! At this stage of their journey they need our support, because a modified van is a critical piece of ensuring Adelyn's inclusive life continues for many years to come. It also enables their family to continue enjoying the special times they deserve on their adventures together.
