Help Callan's Family with Medical Expenses

Callan is a busy 10 year old in the 4th grade. He’s a born-and-raised North Dakotan, that is a practicing blue belt in Taekwondo and absolutely lives for and loves playing music on his guitar, especially Green Day.

Callan was diagnosed with a rare condition of the skull called Chronic Complex Syndromic Multi-Suture Craniosynostosis (Cranio). Being syndromic means that it is genetically recurring, Cranio is a skull defect that causes one or more of the fibrous sutures of the skull to prematurely fuse together. When these sutures fuse, the skull is not able to expand to accommodate the growing brain resulting in pressure. If left untreated, it can lead to loss of hearing, blindness, as intracranial pressure with severe debilitating headaches with vomiting, seizures and even death.

Because of Callan’s rare case, finding a specialized surgeon that would take his case was about as rare as his diagnoses. Callan’s family has been blessed with finding two medical teams, including Dr. Jesse Taylor at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Dr. Jeffrey Fearon and Dr. David Sacco at Medical City in Dallas, Texas.

Callan has had several invasive neurosurgeries called Cranial Vault Reconstructions (CVR). In summary, his skull is removed from around his brain, then broken into multiple pieces like a puzzle, twisted apart like an Oreo cookie, and then pieced back together and placed back around his brain, thus forming a ‘new’ skull to alleviate pressure and allow room for his brain to continue growing.

To date, Callan has underwent 12 neurosurgery procedures and will undergo his 13th major neurosurgery, another CVR, in December with his Dallas medical team. Due to the surgeries being out of state, they’re also considered out-of-network for medical coverage.

All of this has significantly impacted Callan’s family due to insurmountable debts from both previous and ongoing surgeries and travel expense. Donations go directly to help offset these costs.
