Help care for Steve Phillips of Black Dog Produce

Hi. My name is Sandra Weakley and I am helping Carol Phillips raise funds for Steve Phillips’ care.

On June 5th, one of our favorite local Farmers, Steve Phillips of Black Dog Produce, suffered 8-9 strokes in multiple areas of his brain. Many may also remember earlier this Spring Steve had experienced some eye problems/blindness that doctors could not explain but now it is thought to be connected to clots and the strokes as one is very near his left eye . Steve spent several days in the ICU at Martha Jefferson and is currently at Encompass Rehab in Charlottesville working on regaining strength, use of his right side, coordination, focus, and especially prevention of falling. His brain is confused, his long term memory is gone and he’s struggling with short term memory retention all due to the damage in his brain. Steve still thinks he can stand and move around on his own which is resulting in a lot of falling. Carol, Steve’s wife is working hard to prepare for Steve to return home sometime in July. Carol has been out of work since June 5 and without any PTO, so their bills are piling up. She will need to return to work and Steve will require around the clock care that is not covered by their insurance. They do not qualify for Medicaid until they sell and exhaust all their assets. Their current home requires some immediate modifications to accommodate Steve who will be in a wheelchair. They will need a 40 foot wheelchair ramp, a handicapped accessible shower with bars, and possibly some hardwood floor walkways.

Many have asked if they could donate to help Carol provide for Steve. The initial goal of this GoFundMe is $100,000 for caregivers, home modifications and medical expenses. There continues to be a lot of unknowns but these three expenses are a reality.
