Help Carel Restore Art Studio After Lytton Fire

Friends of artist Carel Moiseiwitsch have started this Go Fund Me in support of her art studio practice recently destroyed by the Lytton fire. Carel lost both studio and home in the blaze, including a lifetime of her artwork, art materials, tools, supplies, reference materials, books and her rescue cat, Alley. Carel could only grab her sketchbooks as she and her partner Gordon had minutes to flee the flames with their dog Babalu and one-eyed cat Magpie, as seen in their dramatic escape video.

Now staying with family in Vancouver she’s been left without even a pencil to pursue her art. As a lifelong artist the loss of her studio and her artwork is devastating to Carel and everyone that knows her. We are trying to raise $20,000 to help her re-establish her studio and studio practice over the coming months.

Carel is an award-winning visual artist, activist and drawing instructor with a long history of self-reinvention in Vancouver, London and Lytton. Carel was drawn to Lytton 10 years ago by the spectacular desert light and the potent wild canyon landscapes that continue to overthrow human attempts at domestication and control.

For those of us who know her, Carel’s powerful, witty and political artworks have been an important voice of resistance dating back decades. We have no doubt that through her studio practice Carel can rebound from this traumatic experience. And this campaign is to help give her the support she needs to recover.

The funds raised will be used by Carel to rent a temporary art studio in Vancouver, restock it with art supplies, tools and equipment, and begin the important process of reimagining a future life and studio practice back in Lytton. 

This Go Fund Me has been put together by artist Jeannie Kamins and curator Glenn Alteen – two long-time Vancouver supporters of Carel – and the funding will go directly to Carel to re-establish her art practice.
