My name is Veronica. My daughter Cascadia (Cassie) was born 3 and a 1/2 months early in 1985. Tiny and in the NICU almost 2 months but she made it! Over developed lungs, who knew?! Her life was completely normal until she was diagnosed with a pituitary tumor at 18 that ultimately resulted in not being able to have kids, hormonal imbalances, weight fluctuations and medication that put strain on her heart. She handled it all like a true rock star. Fast forward many years, she's working a good job, has friends, dates, is doing well. Out of nowhere 3 years ago she wasn't feeling well and ended up being diagnosed with Meniere's Syndrome and vestibular migraine. Sounds like no big deal, right? They're both officially recognized as disabilities under the ADA. She has a low grade migraine and is slightly dizzy all the time. She can't be around loud noise or bright light for long periods of time. She has to eat an expensive specialized diet, lean proteins, veggies, ingredients to make her own bread, tortillas, etc., spices and herbs that don't contain salt or garlic, to maintain vitamin and mineral levels while avoiding things like sodium but has to have mega doses of B-vitamins injected when they get low to avoid long term brain damage. She can't drive, go out with girlfriends, date, and pretty much has to work remotely to control her environment. If she is overloaded with stimuli she has about 10 minutes to take her abortive meds and be in bed before she goes down completely for 3-16 hours with debilitating pain and dizziness. This limits the amount of time she can be out in public for shopping and running errands. The longer she is exposed the more likely an episode will occur. She is exhausted from being in self preservation mode on these days. There is no cure only throwing darts with medications to lessen the frequency and severity of episodes in addition to environmental control. She was put on unpaid leave right before Thanksgiving and told she would be terminated 30 days later if she wasn't able to get approved for short term disability which she can't be because she can work with the restrictions her specialist advised. She has a physical disability, not a mental deficiency. She's incredibly intelligent. The reason they gave? The company no longer wants to approve the accommodation after 3 years doing exactly that wherein Cassie successfully supervised 8 direct reports and an additional 6+ for her manager from home. She has been with this company almost 13 years. To date she has not been terminated but hasn't been asked to return to work. She is not eligible for unemployment as long as she is employed even without pay and has not received a severence package. She has been left with no income, no insurance, expensive medication needs, rent, bills, and having her career taken from her for no reason. I have been facing my own financial struggles and help as much as I can but she needs more help than I can provide to survive until this situation is resolved. The way companies are requiring in office her job search has been bleak as well. She wants to work, can work. She's good at it! She is an amazing woman who has been dealt one blow after another half her life and hasn't quit or been broken. She's my hero. Her strength and ability to face every demon and keep going is inspiring. I am asking for your help for her. I know everyone is struggling these days but I hope for her.
