Dear Friends,
It was not long ago that many of you gave generously to help my best friend Cat Logsdon, founder of non-profit Zooh Corner Rabbit Rescue, buy a reliable vehicle to allow her to continue her life's work: saving special needs and elderly bunnies who have been abandoned, neglected, or abused by humans. Never in a million years would I have guessed that I would be reaching out to you all again, this time because of circumstances that are barely fathomable.
Earlier this week, the Eaton Fire in Altadena forced Cat and her partner Kevin (a special education teacher who works with low-income, special needs children) and their sanctuary rabbits to flee their rental home in Pasadena with little beyond their lives, the clothes on their backs, their laptops, some important papers, and medications for the bunnies. They were beyond grateful to be taken in by a kind friend. After a day of agonizing uncertainty, they were faced with their worst nightmare: their home and its contents were utterly destroyed. Precious heirlooms like the beautiful table and bench that Cat's late dad, a gifted woodworker, had built by hand. Mundane but essential items like all their clothes, furniture, and dishes. All the toy-making supplies, pens and event gear for Zooh Corner. And - perhaps most heartbreaking of all - the ashes, pawprints, and other keepsakes of almost every rabbit they had loved and cared for over a span of more than 30 years. Gone.
Yesterday, Cat and Kevin bravely went back for the first time to face what had become of their lives and home. Cat sent me several pictures of the devastation, and one immediately stood out. It was of an outdoor rabbit statue that had somehow, improbably, managed to come through the inferno.
We can't help but see it as a symbol - of resilience, of survival, of hope - of the promise of brighter days ahead. But between now and then will be many long, dark, anguish-filled days, as Cat and Kevin grieve and struggle to process their profound loss, while navigating the daunting process of starting over from nothing. Your generosity can help them get back their lives, little bit by little bit, so that they can continue doing good in the world. I know many of us - myself included - and our bunnies have been beneficiaries of Cat's expertise and compassion. Right now, she's the one who needs us, more than ever.
Cat and Kevin's good friends, Sarah and Darren Hendry, are joining me in organizing this fundraiser, and we are deeply grateful for your consideration of support. Thank you for caring, and for helping two amazing humans and their special needs bunnies to recover from unimaginable tragedy.
With gratitude,
Susan
