Help Catherine Phillips and Dave Koval rebuild

12/30/21: A bright, breezy day in Colorado became international news over the course of an afternoon as wildfire, whipped on by hurricane-force winds, tore through Superior and Louisville.

Dave Koval and Catherine Phillips are friends of mine. Their home in the Enclave has served as the center of a community of friends and family for decades, hosting countless twice-weekly meals, Thanksgivings featuring Dave’s five-day turkey gravy, Christmases and weddings.

It’s all gone now. Along with hundreds of other homes, Dave and Cath’s place burned to the foundations during the Marshall Fire. The collection of Guadalupe and Frida Kahlo icons, the pottery and flatware they collected as young marrieds, the colorful fabrics Cath has been using to make masks, the books they read daily to their grandchildren via phone over the pandemic, gone. We don’t expect to recover anything from the wreck.

In the end, that’s all just stuff – we can replace stuff. Dave and Catherine are irreplaceable. Like many others they fled the fire at a moment’s notice, and were fortunate to escape with their two cats.

This fund is here both to help them land on their feet financially, and more importantly to let them know they don’t have to do this alone. Any donations will go towards immediate necessities – food, clothing, toiletries – and to help cover the costs of their temporary home until they find a new one. Anything that does not go towards their immediate needs will be donated to relief organizations or neighbors also recovering from the fire.
