ABOUT: Cathode Cinema is a curatorial screening collective that showcases rare contemporary and archival films, short experimental works & animation that was made possible by Coaxial Arts Foundation, a non-profit multi-disciplinary media arts organization devoted to the support of media, sound and performance art.

HISTORY: In early 2017, we had the idea of providing a space for anyone curious enough to come out to a DIY movie theater in a building that was formerly a sewing machine repair shop turned community-driven arts space, that is still to this day, a thriving incubator for the arts in downtown Los Angeles.

It has always been our priority to help bring the absolute best in arthouse classics, neglected old VHS weirdness from the dollar bin, esoteric sub-genres and hidden gems to the surface, intended for providing and facilitating a community that allows for the celebration of this material which has proven to be an absolute joy for all of us.

Fast-forward 7 years later and we have only just begun to expand what we started at Coaxial in 2017.

Our idea to create something during the Pandemic in March of 2020 was simple and very much rooted in the same concept of our in-person screenings in the years prior: A communal and community-accessible experience in watching and sharing films. We didn’t want to make it exclusive or pretentious. We wanted it to be something that conjured a signal, a frequency that could reach anyone open to receive the transmission that we put out.

OUR ASK: As we continue to move forward and look ahead we are now opening our doors to donations.

We believe that donating will not only contribute to the momentum of what we do, but will help us grow and plan bigger things beyond our current capacity of activity. We have been doing this labor of love out-of-pocket and we have realized that operating like that is not sustainable for growth.

We need your help to cover crucial overhead expenses, lay a solid foundation for our upcoming in-person film screenings, and develop new merchandise. With your generous support, we can ensure the sustainability and growth of Cathode Cinema in 2023 and beyond.

1. In-person Film Screenings: We are eager to bring back the magic of our - IRL - film screenings. Your support will help us lay a foundation for these events, covering expenses such as venue rentals, staff, screening rentals and licensing, and entertainment such as curatorial DJs, guest speakers for Q&A panels and other surprises!

2. New Merchandise: Through these years merch has been essential to our financial sustainability. Your contribution will allow us to develop and produce an array of new cool stuff like t-shirts that we can produce locally from in-house print shops which will help us to move out of the ‘print-on-demand’ space which has been such a difficult and exhaustive platform for fulfilling orders. Additionally, we want to offer limited edition merch from various collaborating artists!

3. Overhead Expenses: By supporting our fundraiser, you will help us cover essential operational costs. By helping with these overhead expenses, we can focus on delivering outstanding cinematic experiences while maintaining the stability of our collective. This includes any needed equipment.

4. Research and Development: We want the time and bandwidth to investigate further into the realm of expansion. This includes R&D in the digital screening space for channel options through various media consoles.
