Hello Everyone,
My name is Caylan and I am 21 years old from London, England. From a young age, I have always struggled with my health, which has permanently affected my mobility and education. This is because in 2017, I had 5 emergency surgeries on legs, due to rare unknown medical condition causing me to mobilise with walking aids such as crutches and a wheelchair. After this ordeal, it impacted my studies as I missed an extended period of school time, which caused concern with my teachers and doctors for me finishing with my cohort. However, I was able to overcome those obstacles: complete my A-levels to a high calibre and get into the University of Nottingham.
My struggles with my health worsened during my tenure in Nottingham, where I had 6 emergency surgeries on both my legs and back, which made my university question whether I could finish my studies. When I spoke to them, they extensively stressed for me to defer my studies and wait until I am in better health as they could not accommodate to my needs. Despite their reluctance to support me through my studies during a period of bad health, I used their lack of confidence to power me through and graduate with a 2:1 In a BA Film and Television Studies degree.
I have always had an avid interest in film and television and telling stories throughout my years in education. During my degree, my passion for writing and storytelling was solidified by my chance of developing a script for an original idea within one of my modules, which awoken a desire to learn more about the mechanics of telling a story. This led to me looking for institutions that could teach me more about telling stories and writing scripts, which led me to discover the National Film and Television School (NFTS). When I first discovered the NFTS, I was gobsmacked by their facilities as the campus looked like a real life studio set. As soon as I read their screenwriting course, I knew that this was the place for me as I saw myself being taught by some of the best within the industry and developing my skills under the tutelage of experienced seasoned veterans within screenwriting. Their screenwriting course was unlike any other because everyone that was teaching us were still active and thriving within the industry rather than an out-of-touch professor, who may not of achieved the success that they wanted to. The fact that I could be learning from these talented people as well as attending this school allowed me to envisage my ideas becoming a reality. Because of this, I applied for the Screenwriting: Finding your voice course so that I can learn more as a writer and develop my own ideas. I was apprehensive to apply because when I attended an open day, they said that they mostly have students that are over 25 and only accept people under that age on rare occasions, if they thought that they are special. Hence, it was to my surprise when I received the acceptance letter telling me that I was one of the lucky individuals, out of thousands of applicants, that got into my chosen course which starts in January.
Despite getting into my dream course, my dreams may not become a reality due to the price of the course. This is because this is a postgraduate certificate meaning that I cannot get any support from Student Finance. Also, there has been an abundance of family bereavements this year meaning that it has put a further financial strain on my family and I cannot turn to them for support either. Thus, this leaves me in a predicament with not being able to take this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity at the top film school in the world. Thus, I turn to your contributions through this page and your contributions to allow me to live out my dreams and attend this school, so that I learn to write films and television programmes that are successful. Thank you for all of your support!
