Help Celso's School in Guatemala

Hello, my name is Celso Vasquez. I was one of seven children living an impoverished life in my home country Guatemala. This changed when I was 13 years old when I came to The United States alone escaping poverty and gang violence and ultimately, seeking a better life. I was fortunate to live in Clinton where I graduated from Clinton High School thanks to the support of my family and friends. I am currently studying General Studies at Mohawk Valley Community College, and in the future, I would like to pursue a career in Economics or Politics because I've always wanted to help people.

In 2019 when I was a high school junior, I led an effort to collect soccer equipment for children in my hometown in Guatemala for a school project. This initiative caught the attention of several local media outlets:

Now, I am fundraising for the children and my former school in Guatemala so that they can guarantee that those children will receive an education. In Guatemala, public education stops at sixth grade unless you can afford to pay for higher education. The unfortunate children of my hometown do not have the same opportunities that I had. Due to COVID-19, the students are only attending school in person one day a week, and online education isn't even an option for them. Many families cannot afford to send their children to school —school costs $45 a month, which they cannot pay. I am trying to raise money for their school so that children can receive their education. I also want to use the money to buy an electric stove so the people in the community can cook meals for the children there. I am raising funds through the local non-profit, the Mohawk Valley Latino Association in Utica, NY. The executive director, Sonia Martinez, and her team are helping me immensely.
