Help For Our Great Niece Charlotte Rose McDermott
Donation protected
At the tender age of just over 6 months old, our great niece (Charlotte Rose McDermott) has endured more than most. Tod & I are starting this campaign to assist our nephew and his wife, Bryon and Ali, during this difficult time.
In utero, Charlotte was diagnosed with Situs Inversus, which means that all of her internal organs are completely reversed or mirrored from their normal positions. When she was 2 months old, she was further diagnosed with a very rare and severe disease called Biliary Atresia. She underwent a 7 hour surgery in the hopes of saving her liver. However, unfortunately, that surgery was not successful and Charlotte is now in need a liver transplant.
Charlotte has been in and out of the hospital these past 6 months for various infections and issues while awaiting a new liver (in the interim she has also been diagnosed with cholangitis, hyperbilirubinanemia, ascites and portal hypertension). She has a feeding tube to ensure nutrition and is on 6 daily medications. She is now home while she awaits her transplant. Potential living donors are currently being tested in hopes of finding a perfect match. Once her transplant is complete, Charlotte will require an extended hospital stay.
After surgery, the hope is that Charlotte will eventually be able to reduce the amount of medications she takes as the threat of rejection becomes less likely and her immune system becomes stronger enabling her to live a relatively normal lifestyle.
Both Bryon and Ali have been out of work for long stretches of time since Charlotte's birth. As you can imagine, their medical bills and day-to-day living expenses have increased significantly. Ali will be unable to return to work as Charlotte will require around the clock care for some time. Therefore, they will be living solely off of Bryon's income for the forseeable future. All donations will go towards medical care for Charlotte, lost wages and living expenses while they go through this very difficult time. We appreciate any help you could possibly provide, no amount is too small.
With love and gratitude, Kelly (McDermott) & Tod Short
