Help Cheryl Survive Her Cancer Year

Donation protected
Sherwood, Oregon hairstylist and single mother Cheryl Russell is coming off a tough pandemic year, but now she's facing an even tougher battle with aggressive stage-three invasive breast cancer. Cheryl's coworkers and friends at Savvy Hair Studio  are reaching out to friends, clients, and the community to help her survive a projected year of chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, and recovery ... and help her rebuild her life in the aftermath.

About Cheryl:

Cheryl has been a self-employed hairdresser for over 25 years, starting her career at Head to Toes in Tualatin. She's been part of the Savvy family since 2012.

Cheryl is a long-time Sherwood resident, living there since 2000. She bought her modest home in Old Town Sherwood as a single mom, raising her first son there until he graduated from Sherwood High in 2015. Her second son, now 13, also attends school in Sherwood.

This last year has been a tough one for Cheryl. She recently became a single mother again while facing the financial hardship that hit all self-employed hairdressers during the pandemic. Cheryl has always been there for others, volunteering her time and hairdressing skills at St. Mary's Home for Boys and actively participating in her church. She loves the outdoors, camping and hiking with her dog, fishing, and aspiring to get a master herbalist degree. You may see her out in her garden or riding her bike around town with her son. Her free spirit and infectious personality can light up a room. Her laughter can often be heard coming from the Savvy break room.

We’re a close-knit group here at Savvy, and Cheryl is part of the fabric that holds us together. She’s kind, helpful, funny, fiercely independent, strong-willed and extremely hardworking.

She also has a hard time asking for help.

 Cheryl's Diagnosis:

As you know, thanks to pandemic restrictions, Cheryl's savings had been depleted over the past year. Then, in late February 2021 — just as her business was beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel — Cheryl received a devastating diagnosis of breast cancer.

Further testing revealed she has stage 3 invasive breast cancer, with multiple tumors. One tumor is approximately three-and-a-half inches in diameter and is ulcerating.

Cheryl's medical team designed an aggressive treatment plan that includes six months of chemotherapy, a radical mastectomy, and radiation. She was told to expect the entire process of treatment, surgery and recovery to take a full year.

She will be unable to work during much of this time period.

Coming on the heels of last year's income hit, this diagnosis is financially devastating for Cheryl and her school-age son.

We want to help relieve as much financial stress as possible on Cheryl while she undergoes this tiring process. 100% of the funds will go directly to Cheryl so she can focus on treating her cancer while continuing to raise her youngest son.

We know this has been a hard year for many of us — but we hope you can find it in your heart to give whatever possible. It will be greatly appreciated, and Cheryl promises to pay it forward. We know she’s determined to bravely beat this — she's a fighter — and we want her to know she supported by her family, friends, and the wonderful community of Sherwood.

We love you, Cheryl!

How Donated Funds Will Be Used:

Cheryl is working with her medical team to apply for services that  will help her over the next year, including Michelle's Love, and Cheryl's family is helping in every way they can. But her savings are almost totally depleted, and she needs an immediate financial bridge to sustain her until those services kick in.

Cheryl will also need money in the bank as she rebuilds her life in the aftermath of a projected year of treatment, surgery and recovery, during which she will frequently be unable to work.

Your donation will help cover insurance copays and deductibles, groceries, her mortgage, payment of an existing credit-card bill, gas and other transportation costs, home-maintenance costs (plumbing, appliance repair, etc.) as they arise, building a much-needed savings buffer to cover any unexpected expenses that come up during treatment, transportation, utilities, and school and clothing expenses for Cheryl's school-age son.

Cheryl's need is immediate. Any donation of any size is greatly appreciated.
