Help Christina to pay her sons medical bill
Christina and her family immigrated to Canada in 2015 from Zimbabwa to join their daughter in university who had come in 2014. Her, her husband, their other daughter, and her son packed up and moved here to help with their churches mission.
Christina provides for her family by working 2 full time jobs as a disability support worker. She also has a heart condition that makes working long hours difficult. Her children help to support the family bills. This has created great financial strain for the family.
Hospitalization of Shernotrova
On Dec 19th 2020 Shernotrova went to the hospital by ambulance after Christina came home from work and found him confused, unresponsive, and unable to move his entire body. He was admitted to Health Sciences Center where he stayed until Jan 7th 2021.
Doctors had a difficult time with his diagnosis as his scans and bloodwork came back normal. It was determined he was suffering from Catatonia, a rare psychiatric condition that causes memory loss, confusion, and can freeze limbs in position.
Why doesn't he have insurance?
Due to COVID-19, Shernotrova lost his job at the Assiniboine Zoo and has been unable to obtain other employment. As a result, he was unable to pay his tuition fees which would have made him eligible for health insurance throug the Universities health insurance plan.
In Manitoba, international students do not get provincial health insurance as part of their student visa and are recommended to obtain insurance privately (such as through University plans) . However, due to the familys financial strain they were unable to afford the expensive tuition fees required for Shernotrova to be eligible for coverage.
With all this in mind, his release on Jan 7th was not because he was fully treated, but rather due to the large medical fees that had accumulated over his stay. The doctors were treating him with Lorazepam but have yet to determine the accurate dosage specific to Shernotrova. He is currently seeing a psychiatrist for longer term treatment of Catatonia.
Lastly, the hospital requires 10% of the total bill for a down payment ($9155.10) within 30 days of discharge (Feb 7th) or they will report Shernotrova to Canada Border Services and a Collection Agency. Not only does the family have great financial strain, but is now required to pay a huge fee within a short amount of time or face being reported.
Thank you!
All money raised will go directly to paying off the hospital room fees during Shernotrovas treatment. Thank you so much for your support and interest in this cause. Christina and her family would like to express their gratefulness for your time and support.
Have a blessed day
