Christina, 8 years old was recently diagnosed with a rare disorder called osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer, incidentally after having to make a trip to the ER for a broken femur. Christina's journey began one day about 2 months ago when she came home one day from school complaining about being hit with a ball in the leg. We didn't think much of it and just did the standard heat and ice packs. It was odd how a month later she was still limping and complaining of pain in her leg so we decided to make a trip to the hospital, where they did some imaging and discovered a lesion or abnormal growth inside the bone. They were given a set of crutches and told to keep pressure off of it and continue to alternate ice and heat packs. One week later she was in the bathroom and she tripped over her crutches and landed on the same leg she was supposed to keep pressure off of. Christina had now broken her femur and was rushed to the hospital. Christina spent 5 days in Rady's Children's Hospital, where they completed a biopsy of the lesion and discovered every parent's worst nightmare. Christina was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of malignant cancer. They placed her leg in a cast and gave her a wheelchair. Christina is scheduled to begin chemotherapy on August 11, 2023, for a length of 10 weeks. After completion of the ten weeks, she will have to have another scan to see if the cancer responded to chemo, and if in fact, the chemo shrunk the tumor then the doctors will proceed with surgery and replace it with prosthetics or metal implants. If the cancer does not respond to the chemo then they will have to amputate her leg. This road to recovery is approximately going to be 7 months. Doctors state that because Christina actually fractured the bone where the cancer is located, it is more likely to return post-treatment in which their only option would be to amputate at that point. This has been an extremely emotional time for Christina and her family and everyone around her. If you have ever met Christina you would agree that despite the challenges she faces, her unwavering sweetness and generous nature continue to shine brightly, providing inspiration to all those around her.
