Help Cielo heal from a rare cancer

Donation protected
We’re reaching out and asking for your help for a simple purpose. We love Cielo Lutino. And we want her to be in the best possible position to fight and recover from a rare and life-threatening form of cancer.

Who is Cielo? During our many years of friendship with Cielo, we’ve been deeply touched by her special and magical spirit. She is a loyal and supportive friend, a brilliant writer, a dedicated connector and community builder, and a lover of life. She is someone who continuously warms and brightens the lives of people around her with her curiosity, caring, intellect, wit, and (how can we fail to mention?) impeccable style.

Maybe you know Cielo as a friend. Maybe you collaborated with her on a work project or chatted with her at a social gathering. Maybe you learned about her on this page. Today, we can all join the community that is coming together to support Cielo in her fight against cancer.

Cielo’s cancer story. Cielo successfully recovered from breast cancer 10 years ago. Then, in December 2022, she discovered a lump in her torso. Tests confirmed a new cancer was attacking her body. The cancer, a radiation-induced sarcoma, is rare and aggressive. Only 100–200 people in the United States are diagnosed with it annually; the survival rate is 50 to 66%.

Cielo’s medical team has outlined a course of treatment that will ultimately include six rounds of chemo and two surgeries over a period of one year. She began chemo in February 2023 and is taking every possible step to battle the disease.

Cielo’s financial needs. Cielo and her longtime partner and newlywed spouse (!) Wayne are in a challenging financial position. They are confronting the impacts of serious illness, job loss, and job insecurity. Wayne was laid off from his job in September, and they are facing mounting medical bills. Though Cielo has health and disability insurance through her employer and the State of California, the costs of this illness will well exceed her coverage.

How to support Cielo. You can join the community of financial donors who are helping Cielo and Wayne get through this difficult time. Your donations will be used to…

  • Pay $10,000+ in health insurance deductibles ($5,000 per year)
  • Cover copays for medical visits including lengthy chemo treatments ($100s per week)
  • Replace earnings Cielo will lose if she has to take more than the allotted FMLA time off from work for treatment and recovery.
  • Provide Cielo and Wayne with a small financial cushion to ease stress and bolster healing.

Please give what you can to support the campaign; every little bit helps. At a time like this, financial peace of mind makes a big difference. Prayers and good vibes are also welcome. Thank you for being a part of the community that is supporting Cielo!
