Help Cindy McPherson After a Severe Car Accident

Donation protected
At around 8pm on December 23, 2020 my mom ran out to the grocery store to grab a few last-minute things for Christmas dinner. She never came home.

(Cindy, Christmas Eve 2020.)

Cindy McPherson’s life changed in an instant. While heading down a dark, country road, Cindy was involved in a serious, single-vehicle accident. Her car left the highway, went off into a highly wooded area and hit a tree head on. Traumatically, she remembers everything about the crash.

(Cindy's 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe, post-crash at the wrecker.)

Cindy’s injuries were (and are) serious:
She was rushed to WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh and into surgery. She had a SEVERELY open-fractured right ankle, bordering on amputation. She lost a tremendous amount of blood due to this and required two blood transfusions within the first 24 hours. External immobilizing hardware/screws/pins were placed directly into the bones of her right leg (up to her knee) in hopes that the bones will knit/repair themselves. That leg will not be x-rayed or touched for 6-8 weeks.

(Cindy's right ankle/leg, during wound dressing changing.)

Cindy’s left ankle was also broken and required a second surgery on Jan. 4, 2021 to insert a permanent metal plate and seven screws. Cindy additionally sustained fractures to her lower spine (lumbar). There was (still is) a large area on her right shoulder/breast with significant bruising/a large contusion.
Due to her multiple traumas, her pain and blood sugar have been hard to manage. As a long-time Diabetes patient with major foot trauma, this is a serious concern. Cindy has been bedridden, is unable to walk and will be in a wheelchair for some time. But – if you know Cindy – she is very motivated and determined to get better, stronger and not let this beat her.

As I write today (1/18/21), Mom has been in the hospital for four weeks. Conservatively, she will be in hospital for at least 3-4 more weeks. Even still, she will have to be re-admitted for more surgery and recovery after that. That’s a tremendous amount of time in hospital, with bills racking up every day. Not to mention issues with medical insurance and disability. Cindy is increasingly stressed about bills and money, when she needs to be focusing on getting well.

(Following 2nd surgery; 1/6/2021.)

For 20+ years my mother has been the sole provider in our household while my stepdad was terminally ill. She has worked full-time, raised her children, looked in on her aging parents, took care of her husband and paid for his exorbitant medical bills and final expenses two years ago. Those of you that know my mother know how strong and independent she is. This is the most serious trial she has ever faced, she needs help, and she’s asking for it. I know the past year has been hard on everyone, but please know that every kind thought, prayer, sharing of this campaign or dollar you can spare will be valued and put immediately towards Cindy's medical and living expenses.

(Saying goodbye to her husband, Ken. Oct. 2018.)

Let’s help Cindy get back on her feet!
