Help Claudia Recover from a Stroke

Claudia Alarcon, 32, suddenly suffered from a stroke on July 13th, 2018. She has been hospitalized ever since with serious side effects. Doctors don't know how long it will take Claudia to recover and it is unknown how much of her abilities will return to normal.

We are raising money to help Claudia with medical expenses during this extraordinarily challenging time.

What Happened:
After waking up in the middle of the night with an extremely painful headache and severe nausea, a close friend who was staying with Claudia at the time called 911. An ambulance arrived, and she was brought to Rush hospital. Doctors identified that her brain was bleeding. They performed emergency brain surgery to start draining blood from her brain.

Later, doctors determined that the cause of the brain bleed was a stroke. They haven't yet been able to determine the cause or type of stroke Claudia had, but they are speculating that it is a rare type of stroke that she suffered from because she did not have any of the risk factors typically associated with stroke.

Claudia spent 2 weeks in the ICU at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. In the days following her stroke she was unable to see, talk, move her head, walk, or feed herself. She is currently relearning how to do everything. On July 27th, she was transferred to Presence Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago for in-patient rehab. Claudia remains there today and is receiving occupational and physical therapy every day. 

Once Claudia is discharged from the rehab hospital, she will be moving in with her mom and dad where she will continue to require assistance and therapy. Claudia’s mom has taken an unpaid leave of absence from work to care for Claudia.

The Consequences:
The stroke has had some very severe consequences for Claudia. Her speech has been impaired. She is re-learning how to walk, hold a pen, write, eat and many other basic motor skill functions. Cognitively, Claudia is 100% there. As a healthy 32-year-old woman with zero risk factors, Claudia never imagined she would suffer a stroke.

Even with insurance, Claudia is facing high medical bills and loss of income. The timeline for Claudia’s recovery is uncertain. The goal of this campaign is to raise money for Claudia’s expenses to give her and her family some peace of mind.

What She Needs Now:
Insurance will require Claudia to leave the hospital on August 10th and continue her rehab as an outpatient from her home. She will be moving in with her parents because she still requires significant assistance. We will update this list as more bills become available:

* $250 ~ Equipment and modifications to aid her at her parents’ house (hand rails, shower chair, and a walker)

* $2,315 ~ Claudia’s mom has taken an unpaid leave from work to care for Claudia.

* $1,425 ~ Rush bill for 1-night stay in the Emergency Room the night of the stroke.

* $934 ~ Rush bill for ambulance transport from Rush to Presence Resurrection Medical

* $XXXX ~ Rush bill for 2-week stay in the ICU

* $XXXX ~ Presence Resurrection bill for 2-week stay in rehabilitation unit

* $XXXX ~ Outpatient rehab bills once Claudia is released  

This list of equipment and other needs is growing. The amount she will owe for her various hospital stays is also unknown at this time. I will update this list and campaign as more information becomes available.

"I came into town for a 2 year old's birthday party, and stayed with Claudia, even though she  had a busy weekend planned.  She had tickets for Kesha Saturday night, and was flying out for work mid-day Sunday.  Claudia is always so generous, even though it wasn't the most convenient weekend for her, she always has open arms whenever I come in and out of the city.  We went out for dinner and drinks, walked home and everything was normal.  We went to sleep, watching Friends and at 3AM she woke up suddenly and was screaming and yelling and in extreme pain.  We called 911 and they took us to the ER at Rush. 
If I were to give some of the reasons I love Claudia, it is simply for the reasons that I happened to be staying there Friday night.  Claudia is thoughtful, fun, generous, a problem solver and bossy.  She always has open arms for my indecisive traveling and is always willing to make the drive to Detroit a few times each year.  We've only known each other since her 24th birthday when I still lived in Chicago and I randomly came to her birthday party with a friend of mine and coworker/friend of hers.  Though it has only been 8 years, I can honestly say she is a friend for a lifetime. Ayudemos a Claudia a recuperar de un derrame cerebral

Claudia Alarcón a los 32 años sufrió de un derrame cerebral el 13 de julio de 2018. Desde entonces ha estado hospitalizada con efectos secundarios bien serias. Los doctores no saben qué tanto tiempo necesita Claudia para su recuperación y tampoco se sabe si sus habilidades regresan normal. Estamos haciendo recaudación de fondos para ayudarle a Claudia con los gastos médicos durante este tiempo extraordinariamente difícil.

Qué sucedió: Se despertó en medio de la noche con un dolor de cabeza extremadamente doloroso y con náuseas intensas, una amiga que se estaba quedando con Claudia ese fin de semana, llamó al 911. Llegó una ambulancia y la llevaron al hospital Rush. Los médicos identificaron que su cerebro estaba sangrando. Realizaron una cirugía cerebral de emergencia para comenzar a drenar la sangre de su cerebro. Más tarde, los médicos determinaron que la causa de la hemorragia cerebral fue un derrame cerebral. Aún no han podido determinar la causa o el tipo de derrame cerebral que tuvo Claudia, pero están especulando que es un tipo raro el que sufrió porque no tenía ninguno de los factores de riesgo típicamente asociados con el derrame cerebral. Acerca de Claudia:

Claudia es una hija querida, hermana, sobrina, prima, amiga, compañera de trabajo y mucho más para muchas personas. Ella es cercana con su familia y amigos, le encanta viajar, ama a su perro Chicito, es una ávida lectora, ama andar en bicicleta, probar comida nueva y más. Ella es activa, amable, hermosa, generosa, amorosa, hiradiante y reflexiva. Claudia siempre tiene planes con amigos y familiares. Recientemente, disfrutaba viendo la Copa del Mundo, leyendo una novela de Margaret Atwood y haciendo planes para ir de campamento y viajar a Perú.

Claudia no es el tipo de persona que se sienta quieta y este ataque ha afectado mucho más que su cuerpo. Es ferozmente independiente, fuerte, decidida, analítica y motivada, y eso es lo que le ayuda a superar la terapia y las náuseas persistentes y constantes con las que sufre todos los días, ¡pero continúa! No solo es fuerte sino que da el mejor consejo y es realmente una persona maravillosa y afectuosa. Ella es una viajera, una entusiasta, una voluntaria que recluta a otros para ayudar en Chicago Cares. Serve a Thon,  ve un problema y trata de resolverlo y siempre a dado mucho  nunca pide nada a cambio. Claudia fue una de las primeras amigas que hice cuando me transferí a nuestra escuela secundaria y 20 años después todavía es una de mis mejores amigas. - Nisha Ladhani amiga des de infancia
