My name is Clay Mathews and I feel called to serve Jesus Christ as his priest. I am seeking entry into Our Lady of Guadalupe, the North American seminary for the Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (FSSP), but my student loans are the last obstacle. By your generosity and financial support, I will be able to enter formation for the FSSP this fall.
I felt called to the priesthood even before I entered the Catholic Church. It was the pastor of the local parish I met through some friends of mine who suggested that I may have a vocation to the priesthood. I was a Protestant looking into Catholicism at the time, but never really thought I would end up becoming Catholic. Ever since that one comment from my local priest, my life has never been the same. This is because I began to think seriously about the priesthood. It seemed as though after all the years of praying for God's will in my life, he answered my prayers in the most unexpected of ways. Long story short, I entered the Catholic Church in June of 2017, and my desire for the priesthood has only deepened and intensified.
I entered formation for my home diocese and spent one year at Mount Angel Seminary. It was a very intense year, but a very fruitful one. During this time my vocation not only deepened, but it also clarified. I strongly felt a charism being formed within me - a charism for the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (aka The Traditional Latin Mass). As the year progressed, I received many graces, all telling me to leave formation for my diocese and apply to a community dedicated to the Traditional Latin Mass - The Priestly Fraternity of Saint Peter (FSSP).
I left diocesan formation, but since the FSSP requires that I have no loans upon entering, (whereas the diocese allowed it), I left and began working to pay off my loans. I have been working at a mill room cutting wood 8 hours a day, and through this work, I have been able to cut my loans in half. But as the deadline approaches for the selection process, I am hoping for some help. Whatever you can contribute helps in any way, and hopefully by your generosity and by God's grace, I can be debt free and enter seminary this fall. Thank you so much for your support, and be assured of my prayers for you during my journey to the priesthood.
