Help Coach Liz Galloway-McQuitter Receive Cancer Treatment
Donation protected
Dear Basketball Friends and Allies,
Since launching this fundraiser for my former coach in August, we’ve raised an incredible $1,300! However, we still have a long way to go to meet our $5,000 goal, and Coach Liz Galloway-McQuitter continues to need consistent treatment following her August surgery to remove multiple organs affected by cancer.
Liz is fighting every step of the way, but she shouldn’t have to fight alone. This Thanksgiving, I’m asking those who are able to give a little more to help us reach, and hopefully surpass our goal so Liz can focus on healing. To kick things off, I’m challenging you to match my first and second donations for a total of $300 as I share this fundraiser again.
Let me tell you why this is so important to me.
Coach Liz Galloway-McQuitter recruited me to DePaul University and played a pivotal role in my journey. I wouldn’t be where I am today, in Chicago, as a teacher, or as the person I’ve become, had Coach Liz not entered my life.
Last year, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 ovarian cancer. Despite undergoing intense treatment at the Mayo Clinic, including multiple surgeries, Liz remains incredibly strong and determined to regain a normal, healthy life. She’s now facing an extended period of treatment, and I want to ease her financial burden during this fight for her life.
Liz has always been a fighter and a trailblazer. Born in 1955, when opportunities for women in sports were rare, Liz broke barriers as a high school and junior college star. She led her team to a national championship, played three years with the UNLV Lady Rebels, and became a pioneer in one of the first women’s professional basketball leagues, the Chicago Hustle.
Her coaching career was just as impactful. She served as head coach at Lamar University, Northern Illinois University, and Mundelein University, as well as an assistant coach at Dartmouth, DePaul, and Texas A&M. She retired in 2015 after coaching at Rockdale High School in Texas, but she didn’t stop there. Liz now runs a foundation called Legends of the Ball, which uplifts young girls pursuing their college basketball dreams while honoring the pioneers of women’s basketball.
Liz has given so much to others, and now it’s time for us to give back. Every dollar helps, and no donation is too small. Please consider:
- Giving what you can
- Matching my $300 donation
- Sharing this fundraiser with your networks
Thank you in advance for your generosity and support. Together, we can show Liz that she’s not alone in this fight.
