Help Coach Sue Attend the Upstander Academy 2021

My name is Sue Scheppele.  Most people know me simply as "Coach Sue".  I have spent my teaching career empowering students to value one another, to listen to each other's stories and to speak up for those who can not.

My passion is creating learning experiences that recognizes and celebrates students’ identities, lived experiences and culture.   My classroom (really gym) is one that nurtures all students' inherent brilliance and infinite potential.  Representation matters and I strive to provide an educational experience that embraces and reflects all my students.  I believe when we learn about the diverse communities and identities that each of us walk in, we can tear down the walls of bias and bigotry that aim to separate us.

Education is the way to create safe spaces where everyone feels included, welcomed and accepted.  A place that is diverse, equitable and inclusive is one where everyone feels they belong.  Not only is education for my students, but it is for me as well.  As much as they need to learn, I need to continue too.

The Upstander Project is an organization that empowers people to overcome indifference to social injustice.  It helps develop the skills of an upstander and it contributes to action-oriented campaigns in response to vital social issues.

The Upstander Project hosts a six-day professional development program for teachers using post-genocide Rwanda and genocide against Native people in the US as a framework for historical inquiry, sharing new teaching methods and modeling the skills of upstanders.  Its goal is to create more inclusive curricula and schools, public conversations and spaces, as well as helping educators counter bias by promoting understanding, restoration and the repairing of broken relationships.

I want to build a world where children recognize the dominant culture view isn't the only one.  I want to empower them to create the critical conversations and take the courageous steps needed to heal our country.

Your financial support will enable me to attend this valuable learning experience to continue to model and teach the skills of upstanders to our children - those who will be tasked to create a world in which every human being is accepted and celebrated.

The application deadline is March 1, 2021.  The Upstander Project has limited spaces.  It would be of amazing help to receive your donation by February 25, 2021

Thank you so much for your belief in me and your financial support!  YOU WERE MADE TO BE AMAZING!
