Help Colin Rest In Peace

Hello everyone,

My name is Paul Hammond and this month we have, very suddenly, lost the corner stone of our family, my loving father, Colin Hammond.

As many of our family and friends will know, my father's health has been steadily declining over the last few years. Despite his decline in health, we all thought we would have more time with this wonderful man, as last year, the superb NHS worked a miracle in saving him and giving him a second chance at life. Unfortunately and very suddenly, he lost his battle earlier this month to COPD.

Colin was born 25th October 1955 to parents, Nellie and Dennis Hammond, who then went on to have three more sons, Dennis, Phil and Anthony; with each new addition to the family, Colin learned to guide and nurture his younger brothers, whilst teaching them to be strong and determined, whether it came to facing bullies in school, or helping them to be interview ready for future jobs.
This position of eldest brother also prepared Colin for parenthood, welcoming three children, Alan, Lisa and myself. He was a wonderful Dad, ensuring we were always taught right from wrong; he raised us to face our problems head on, but also find light in the darkest of times, and find gratitude even when we were dealt the worst of hands.

Colin attended the Grange Secondary School in Runcorn where his beautiful handwriting and artwork was admired amongst his teachers and peers. From the day Colin left school, he started working for Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). He found good job satisfaction with the company and spent his life working up through the ranks, eventually becoming Plant Controller.

During his time outside of work, Colin enjoyed playing for Runcorn Rugby Union Club as a Prop Forward; while rugby was his favourite sport, Manchester United Football Club held a special place in his heart. He could often be seen sporting Manchester United goalkeeper shirts in honour of his favourite player, Alex Stepney, and he, like many other Manchester United fans, greatly admired the Holy Trinity, George Best, Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton.

Ultimately, Colin was a family man, who strived to provide a good life for his children and grandchildren. He was a gentle giant; a man who towered over most, but was warm and welcoming, and would never fail to provide a cup of tea and a shoulder to cry on. He was loved and respected by his family, including those not related by blood, but in spirit.

Tragically, the Patriarch of our family has been taken from us. Even though we knew this horrific loss would catch up with us one day, we, like many others, thought and prayed we had more time with him. This insurmountable loss for the family has left us without the funds or affordability to pay for funeral costs, which has an up front cost of £2,500 just to be able to lay my father to rest.
If you are in anyway capable of any contribution to help us with these proceedings it would mean the world to my family and I, and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
