Help Colton fight Ewing Sarcoma

Hi, my name is Abby Hickey and I'm organizing this fundraiser on behalf of Bridgette and Colton Smith.

Just a few short months after his 19th birthday, Colton was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare and extremely aggressive blue cell cancer (only about 200 cases in the U.S. per year), following the removal of a 4.5cm tumor from his shoulder.

The family got Colton quickly admitted to the treatment program at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, which is one of very few facilities in the country that understand and treat this particular cancer. After a variety of tests, doctors determined that the cancer started in his clavicle, metastasized into the tumor on his shoulder, and had also spread into his lungs, which is quite typical for Ewing.

Colton began intensive in-patient chemotherapy on July 21st, which is scheduled to continue until mid-January, with the likelihood that they will add 7 weeks or so of radiation therapy to his treatment beginning in October.

Colton’s mom, Bridgette, is with him at St. Jude. She placed her pets and her home in the care of her boyfriend and family members, took an FMLA leave from her job, and drove from Michigan to Tennessee to be Colton’s resident caregiver for the duration of the 8+ months of his treatment plan. Although St. Jude covers medical costs, housing, and much of their daily needs, Bridgette is without income to cover her ongoing bills back home or peripheral expenses during their time in Memphis.

This GoFundMe will directly help lessen the burden of Bridgette’s lack of income during this time, cover additional living expenses for her and Colton, and help with any ongoing treatment or care costs for Colton.
