Help community station Rádio Quântica stay afloat

Rádio Quântica is a Lisbon-based community radio station established in 2015, and developed with a diverse group of artists and crews – a safe haven where the voices of underground artists and activists can be heard.

With a great focus on the inclusion of communities that usually see their space limited on mainstream platforms, quântica is the manifestation of a movement, bringing together DJs, labels, musicians, collectors, cultural agitators and activists from all backgrounds, sociocultural contexts, identities and origins, both from Portugal and other countries.

The radio's epicentre is a live studio in the outskirts of Lisbon as with high rents in the center we simply cannot afford even a small corner. So we moved to our family's mothership, Planeta Manas, at cultural space in Prior Velho, from where hours of live and pre-recorded shows are broadcast weekly, with 24/7 online transmission. Presently, the programming runs about 100 authored shows, over 170 resident artists, with content as varied as soundtracks, noise/ambient, experimental, electronic, funk, hip hop, rock, soul, performative arts and talk shows – each program also inviting national and international guests regularly.

In parallel, Quântica also organizes events, like the festival ano 0, dedicated to emerging artists, evenings in several venues, festivals, talks and workshops, as well as the intersection between identity and gender, sexuality and its role in the musical culture of cities. Quântica is now also an independent homonymous label, where works of some of the residents have been released, as well as special compilations – the first to raise funds for studio hardware and the second one, in 2020, donates all sales towards a local anti-racist organization.

We are a non-profit organization that doesn't have a business model by nature, so we don't have a way to make money to keep the station running if we don't rely on public funding (which we get very little of and quite late each year, making the first 6 months of the year extra hard) or support from our listeners. That's why we started this fundraiser, as we start 2023 with very little options as money is running as low as it gets and our equipment all needs to either be serviced or replaced for industry standard models that community stations around the world have – like the CDJs2000, and proper decks, and a mixer that works, for example. Furthermore, we need financial support to pay salaries to our studio managers and assistants, given that curation and scheduling has always happened on a volunteer basis.
